The town will take part in the Road Safety Challenge, a province-wide pro- gram that will feature a long line-up of safety-conscious activities from May 30 to June 6. The mumicipality with the most signifi- cant decline in traffic collisions compared to its figures over thse saine period a year prior will he declared thse winner. Safe driving practices, from not dninking and driving to using proper child seats, will be promoted throughout the week with help from local organizations and husi- nesses. The event encourages safety-con- acious community members to join forces in making Ontario roads safer for everyone using them, said Jans Mowbray, chair of thse Milton Road Safety subcommittee orga- nizing local activities. 'Driving on our roads shouldn't be a matter of life or death," she said. "It's imperative tisat we provide information to drivers so tlsey can make better decisions." Whiile fatal collisions are down overaîl, Milton has thse highest accident rate involvisg deats in Halton Region. Last year, 26 communities came together for some friendly competition in thse chal- lenge, ail in thse name of improving road safety in Ontario. This year, the stakes are higher as the field of participants grows to 35 chties and towns across Ontario. Involved localiy in the challenge are Halton Regional Police, the provincial governient thse OPP, thse Town of Milton, elementary schools and high scisools, the Halton Regional Healts Department, Trauma Prevention Council, MADD, Nassagaweya Community Consultation Committee and the Optimist Club. Support bas also been piedged hy numerous busi- nesses, but more help is needed, Ms Mowbray said. The orgamizing committee will fliake a Road Safety Challenge presentation to town council May 17, and thse week wiIl be officially launched Sunday, May 30 at noon at tIse Milton police station on Childs Driye. Featured events wilI include Bicycle Safety Day (May 30) by the Optimist Club, Truck Safety Day (June 1) - a truck safety blitz organized by Halton police, the Ministry of Transportation and OPP - and Intersection Safety Day (June 3) - a seat belt blitz. Don't Drink and Drive Day on June 4 will feature thse RIDE program as well as activities at local schools. On June 5, Halton police will host a child seat safety seminar at thse Milton police station.
