Literally. Council recently approved a recommen- dation by staff to forward ail re-billing costs associateti with tax capping to the Province. The reimbursement bid focuses on Bill 79, the Province's legislation enforcing tax capping on commercial, industrial and multi-residential buildings. The bill imposes a 10 per cent cap in 1998, and 5 per cent caps in 1999 and 2000. The cap applies to both increases and decreases of greater than 10 per cent. The legislation bas been vehemently opposed by Halton Region, which had already set up phase-in and rebate policies to offset property tax hikes caused by cur- rent value assesament. Milton had sent out its final 1998 tax bills before the newest legislation - the seventh of it's kind in a year- was pro- posed. Now the Town will have to mail out new bills for approximately 300 local properties. 'This means welIl have to reverse ail the entries for the properties we issued rebates for and re-issue bills to about 300 proper- ties," aid Jim McQueen, the Town's act- ing chief administrative officer.
