Miltonians, I am certain, are feeling a similar sense of anxiety surrounding the planned growth of our town. Our community, as our children, will be altered with growth. New ideas and people will challenge our known way of life and cause us to see things differently. We will have to learn new street names, the best way to avoid traffic lights, the shortest routes to our favourite shops and restaurants. We will meet new neighbours, perhaps move our families to the new residential neighbour- hoods and certainly welcome new businesses to Milton to serve the community. Exciting times are often uncertain times. I have been a Milton resident all my life and have witnessed major growth in Milton before. My children, direct descendants of Miltons' founders Jasper and Sarah Martin, were born at Milton District Hospital during our last peri- od of growth during the late seventies and early eighties. I remember being asked if I lived in "new" Milton or "old" Milton. The massive rowth that occurred then saw our community eap from under 10,000 in 1973 to almost 30,000 in 1985. The projected growth for Milton from a per- centage standpoint is the same. We have done it before and survived and I believe we can weather the coming growth and prosper as a community again! So as we encounter life's changes and chal- lenges we will look back on this part of our evo- lution and realize that even though nothing ever stays the same neither does it alter too drasticaly. Milton of tomorrow will have more homes, more businesses, more streets and more people. But together we will ensure it continues to be a place filled with people who care about one another, a true community! BREAKFAST WITH THE MAYOR More than 100 business people, developers and elected representatives attended the August 11 Mayor's Breakfast hosted by the Chamber of Commerce. Speaking on the subject of "Growth at Long Last" Mayor Krantz, Director of Planning & Development Mel Iovio and HALTON CREDIT UNION * Proudly Serving Members Since1957 EARL DOLMAGE Branch Manager 44 Main Street East Milton, Ontario (905) 878-4168 Acting C.A.O. and Director of Cororate Services Jim McQueen laid out in etail the next stages in the process toward significant population growth for Milton. The secondary pans are underway to provide all the necessary ehind the scenes framework for growth to occur. Representatives from the Chamber of Commerce participate on the planing commit- tees and information is shared with Chamber members during regular informal meetings with Town of Milton staff. The business com- munity is eager to proceed and participate in the new opportunities that accompany popula- tion growth. It means employees currently liv- ing outside Milton can relocate and be closer to tho their jobs, senior managers/owners can find suitable housing for themselves and a trained/skilled workforce can ensure continued company success. Growth will bring both challenges and opportu- nities to the community but through the efforts of community leaders Milton will continue to be a community founded on sound principals and family values. Mayor Krantz & Director of Planning & Development Mel lovio made the presentation to the business community. BOOK YOUR BUSINESS AFTER HOURS for 1999 TODAY!! Members!!
