The accident occurred on Derry Road between Fifth and Sixth lines shortly after 8 p.m. According to police, an eastbound vehicle driven by Mr. Wergeland lost control - likely due to overcompen- sation for road sleekness - on the S- Bend and entered the westbound lane. Mr. Madill's westbound vehicle then struck the car head-on. Mr. Wergeland was pronounced dead at the scene while Mr. Madili was transported to Milton District Hospital but tater died as a result of his injuries. No other people were in the vehi- cles. A campaign manager for Rick Malboeuf during this spring's federal election, Mr. Madili of Farmstead Drive was an active member of the Reform Paity and sales representative with Argyle and Broadstreet an agency in Etobizoke that seils com- puters. "This has really thrown me," said Mr. Malboeuf upon learning of the crash Wednesday moming. "Brad and 1 met through the Refonn Party in 1993. He was a strong family mani and just a really nice guy." Mr. Madill is survived by his wife Mary and his teenage stepson Erie. Survived by wife Sharon and daughters Michelle and Rebekah, Mr. Wergeland of Fifth Line was a skilled carpenter for more than 25 years and an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Oakville. Funeral services for the two men were scheduled for yesterday and today. The service for Mr. Wergeland, who was bo.rn ini Mission, B.C., is heing-fheld at Calvary Baptist Church today. The Champion's Christmas Bureau Fund hit a final total of $24,331 for the Milton branch of the Salvation Army. "We made this year's goal (of) $20,000 but 1 really didn't think we'd actually make it," said Champion clas- sîfled manager Sheena Cameron. "This is unbelievable. 1 cannot believe it." Ms Camneron said the same donation programn conducted by the Oakvitle Beaver, the Champion's sister paper in Oakville, raised under haîf what the people of Milton donated. Sandra (Harse> Ross, director of Salvation Army family services in Milton, thanked everyone in Milton for their support. She said kettle collections were Up, individual donations were up and the Champion's collections were Up. Last year the Champion's Christmas Bureau Fund topped out at $21.414 after the goal was set at $16.000. "People in Milton need to be salut- ed," Ms. Ross said. "We were able to provide 220 Christmas hampers this year." Last year the Salvation Army put together just under 200 Christmas hampers for families in Milton. "This makes for a good Christmas for people and will make for a good year people who need our help in 1998," said Ms Ross. Ms Cameron said the largeat single donation was $2.500 provided by the employees of Rockwell Intemnational, now known as Menitor. One man, who insisted on anonymi- ty, made a personal donation of $ 1,000, Ms Cameron said. The Christmas Bureau Fund has been in operation through the Canadian Champion for more than 10 years.
