Ronald C. Lathan City Clerk and Director Gerry Brooks sees the end of Milton as it exists today The Champion Gerry Brooks, running for Milton's rural regional counicil seat, thinks this will be the last term of counicil in which the town will exist as it does today. "Everything that's happening now - restructuring, pooling, and-downloading will impact us in Milton and Halton," he said. "I can't believe it already hasn't affected us more." Mr. Brooks said there will be significant changes to governing and municipal boundaries over the next three yeara. lHc said he supports the end of regional govemment, to be replaced by local municipalities in some new configuration. Rcmaining towns and cities will pur- chase major services through the Greater Toronto Services Board (GTSB), he suggested, adding some areas like Nassagaweya should be able 10 opt out of the Greater Toronto Ares (OTA). "If the province can amalgamate municipalities which share a community of interest, then it follows that they should be equally receptîve t0 excluding those who do not logically helong," he said. The two-termi local councillor said Nassagsweya has common lies with Wellington County and the City of Guelph. However, he ssid, without factual informa- tion on leisure, entertainment and shopping pattemns of people in Nassagaweya, it is impossible to know where to draw new boundaries. s"agamatIons tend to cause services to rise to the highest level ' 1 , 4-OERRY BROOKS lgnoring the issue, as the current counicîl has chosen 10 do, doca no( serve constituents wcll, he said. "People in Milton psy lower taxes because thcy have tewer services than elscwhere in (Halton) Region," he said. "Amalgamations tend to cause ser- vices 10 risc to the highest level." Hc added that by contracting out services, munici- palities can gain the sdvantages of economies of scale while maintaining services at a locally acceptable level. "1t's a totally différent hall game in the southern rural ares," said Mr. Brooks. "People there are more closcly aligned wîth surrounding communities. Many people on the Ninth Line teed thcy should he part of Mississauga."
