8 - The Canadian Champion, Tuesday,October 21, 1997' ci eApi NS ILWKSiiOl FARMEFRSf Report card is in for municipal councillors By BRAD REAUME The Champion Witb municipal eleclions rigbt around the cor- ner, and die cunrent Milton town council's tenure st an end, it's lime te review iheir performance. It is important t0 note that counicillors do, or al least are supposed te do, much of their work out- aide council chanibers. It's also worth noting that those who don't perfonin well at counicil have been known t0 use their extracurricular efforts as an excuse. In the end the real judgmenl is made ai the polIs every three years. This year's election is slated for Monday, November 10. Colin Best Mr. Besi bas taken stepi to improve bis imageB as the poster child for tardiness. St11 1 spread a.littie 100 thin, given bis interesi in numer- oui community commiiiees, Mr. Best seems unable t0 drive the agenda despite good ideas and a very open mind. However he is good at ferreting out the seem- ingly minor but ultimalely important delails. Hlis constituents love bim because of bis personal involvement. He is a teamn player ai council. Gerr Brooks The councillor from Campbellville constantly rises on 6"a point of clarifi- cation" but those clarifications neyer seem t0 Iead any- wbere. Mr. Brooks is almost always swimming against the cuiTent ai council. Sometimes ibis serves t0 bigblight the differ- ences between Mîlton's vaulous factions. Other limes il opens necessary debate on important issues, wbich many counicillors seemn content t0 duck. John Challinor Mr. Challînor usually drives the agenda. On a coun- cil devoid of true leapes ie cls est leades the ilspert îbîng. However, a born bureaucrat, a Mr. Challinor's furious and prolific letter writing binges cloud issues as often as lhey illuminate. Mr. Challinor is not above canrying long-last- ing grudges and bringing party politics into the counicil chanibers. Rck Day As an Oakvîlle horse trader in the court of Krantz , Mr. Day ta some IU sider. Despîte bis long, long service as a councîllor hie appears remarkably youthful. a political Donian Gray. Mr. Day is plain spoken, impoliîic and as entertaining as bie is correct. Ralling against big government, he provides counicil with a bench- mark of wbat they wish to say and how not t0 say it. Ron Furik Ron Who? Mr. Furik is a one-issue counicillor. He is f keenly inlereste n I recreation and leisure issues but merely filîs a seat for mosi other dis- cussions. He seems a man capable of more, but content t0 let others do the talking. Ma"in Howardi A study in screaiîng dîplo- matically, .MsI DI Howard tilted j T bier colleagues and bureaucrats from inside the figurative bellway, althougb rarely speaking as plainly as she clearly would have liked 10. Her considerable talents were largely ignored by counicil, 10 the bass of Use citizens of Milton. Ms Howard'a perspective, combined with Mr. Day's cbutzpah, would probably bave made for the best politician in Halton. Waily Hunter Perbaps the brigbtest lighi on counicil. Mr. HunterA is capable, con- ' cemned and able to .cut through the clutter. His political and negotiation skilîs are, still developing but already hie camres the baIl on sev- eral important issues. Despite bis youth and lack of experience, be'a the man. Gord Krantz Mayor Krantz presides like a medieval Englisb mayor. He's a great master of cere- monies and keeper of Use flame, how- ever, many and ever more voeal are those questioning bis leadership abilities. The mayor bas managed t0 keep growth issues on the table while flot completely alienating business inlerests, a considerable task that is nearly complete. Barry Lee Regional council- lor for Milton's rural consiuency,B Mr. Lee's local per- I formance is the antithesis of bis regional one. Quietl at regional council because bis con- stituency is perbapa the farthest removed fromn issues and concernis, Mr. Lee is quick t0 immerse bimself in local debate and capable of substantial insight. Art Melanson Apparen tlIy, Milton council bas Il members, D although a casa observer could per- bapi be forgiven for thinking ibere are only 10. Mr. Melanson is like a fog; be's there, but not ftully tangible. He only rises to commend business initiatives, but seems unconcemred witb balancing business and public intereats. Brian Peuman Mr. Penman can always be counted oni t0 provide bal- ance, insight and i fresb tbinking. A potentially invaluable member of council, bie bas bis hand in so many other pies one bas t0 wonder why hie botb- ers with town council. He bas become less vocal in recent years, and bas taken to pitby commentary on issues, rather than offening substantive ideas. However, given bis experience, observera; can take somne comfort that if pushed by senious problems, he would probably apply bimself t0 their resolution.
