That' s the message the Halton Regional Health Department lu deiivering during Breast Cancer Awarenesu Month in October. "We are inviting women toi take action," said departiment spokesperuon Pamela Fornyth. "We are encouraging ail women to Ieam about breant heaith." Ail women are at risk of developing the diseuse, she uaid. But the Isl increases as a womnan agen - especiaily olver the age of 50. "The reality is that mont breaut cancer occurs in women who have no other risk factors." Breast cancer is the mont common type of cancer in womnen. A Canadian woman bas a one in nine chance of developing breant cancer in ber lifetime. In 1997, it'n expected that about 18,400 women in Canada wiII be diagnosed with breant cancer. Knowing what tbey should do to look after their breasts is tbe irut step for pre- vention, Ms Fornytb said. Doing the fol- iowing is recommended: e Women aged 20 toi 30 years sbould ieam about boeunt self examination (BSE) and be aware of any breant changes. A yearly breant examination by a doctor or a nurse ile important. . Women in tbeir forties nbould practice monthly BSE and bave a yearly breaut exam.
