'~1 game over, By STEVE LeBLANC Special to The Champion The Milton Jr. B Mavericks bad a full lineup and were in full spirits Tuesday night, wben their 1997 ride came to a full and complete stop. la front of a sizeahle crowd at Tonelli Arena, they took a 21-10 sbellacking from tbe Elora Mobawks and were eliminated four games to one in their Tier tI semifinal sbowdown. Head coach Jim Lewortby said be wasn't too disappointed at how quietly bis team went out - stating tbat tbey did improve over last season and are already looking towards 1998. 'We won four more games this season and became a winning lacrosse club, so tin not really upset," explained Lewortby. "The guys just weren't interested after we missed tbe Tier t playoffa. "They went out and bad fun tonigbt (Tuesday) and didn't resort to cbeap tacties once the game was out of reacb. Tbey lost witb dignity." Milton fans probably would bave liked their teamn to go down witb a littie more figbt as weil bowever. Their Mavericks sbowed no defensive effort tbrougbout tbe entire tilt and were out of striking distance by the midway mark. The biggest lapse came at tbe stars of the second wben Elora walked nigbt in and tai- lied tive times in three-and-a-balf minutes. The visitors managed three unanswered goals on two other occasions during the balance of the contest. First-line anchor Brian Rooney led the Mohawks' bit parade with four goals and nine assista whiie partner Jeremy Walser collected five goals and added three beipers. Chris Landoni was another standout with six assists and a pair of tallies. Two-goal outputs came from Dave Fowiie, Jarret MacDouga and AP Adam Rooney. Higbiighting Miiton's meager offensive campaign were captain Andrew Hartbolt, Jimmy Leworthy Jr. and CrrAig Hedley. Tbe tirat-line trio figured in six of their team's goals and posted four-point nights each. Jeff Cumie and Cory Leigb each tallied twice wbiie Donald Perry drew two assista. rn~j- Mavs out Single belpers came from Mark Beisel, Grabam Darling, Shane McConnell, Brent Moyer and Paul Wade. Splitting tbe netminding duties were starter Kevin Eansor and midget call-up Mike DeBoer, wbo replaced an injured Joey Camilleri in the final two outings. The absence of Currie, Brent and Brad Moyer, Adam Richards and Jamie D'Oliveira cost the Mavericks a 10-8 loss Monday nigbt in Elora. Tbis put the teami on the cbopping block and essentially ended their season. This samne lack of team commitment - because of part-time jobs and wcekend tripa - is what cost Milton their Tier I playoff seat- ing. The Mavericks led the game as lat as the 17 minute mark of the second, but eventually ran out of gas. They scored juat three times over the final 30 minutes. Landoni fired in the winning goal for the hometown boys at 12:42 of the third. Providing a little insurance in the last fîve minutes was Cbris Wilson. Each scored twice on the night, as did aniper Rob Lockhart. Witb the Mohawks holding the firat-line at bay for the buik of the gamne, Paul Wade stepped up for Milton and ttàmed a hat- trick. Leigh was aiso on bis game with a goal and an assiat and McConneil scored for the firat time in weeks. Hartholt was restricted to a goal and an assist, Hedley tallied once and added two heipers and Leworthy Jr. drew two assista. A pair of powerpiay goals for Elora made the difference in game four. The Mavericks went 0-for-4 with tbe mani- advantage. Elora now moves on to face the Akwesasne Ligbtning for tbe Tier il Blair Trophy. tn Tier t piayoff action, Orillia bas eliminated Spartan 4-1. )4ftùcW lui > 18 Thonipson RdL., Unit #7& 8 iJ! flO BD#J~M~ ILTON* i~ IE,878CI7421 MGilon 878-1818 6 *%est es†††††††††††††††††††††††††*†††††††*††††††††&†††0††q†††.†††††††q†† ç %
