Youth crime and drug abuse among youths in the Maplegrove-Clearview ares of Oakville bas increased drarnatically. Thirty-one high school students from Oakville Trafalgar and Queen Elizabeth Park were admitted 10 bospital for drug related prohlems versus only four the pro- vious year. The strategy, introduced 10 Halton's health and social services comrniltee recently, is intended 10 ho a tool-kit for community action. Il includes efforts 10: coordinate services and resources; raise awareness; increase community supports, and youth activities, and provide educators with the akilîs 10 identify and respond 10 problems. "The problem doesn't exiat in one neighbourhood in one eornmunity," said Halton Chair Joyce Savoline. "It is noces- aary t0 put together a program for the whole region." Arnong the communiîy supports will be a web site in which parents and youths can tum for information. Committce members heard how people wanî 10 gel information anonyrnously. "It's a tool," said Oakville Mayor Ann Mulvale. "Even if il only snags a few peo- ple il's worth il. Il's low cost." Halton's medical officer of health Dr. Bob Nosal said the web site also allows for feedback frorn those who access il. There's nu region-wide telephone hoîline, but several organizations have help.linos. "Unleas sorneone in criais is arrested they cannot access help (through the Health Department) and that is clearly an issue," said Dr. Nosal. Mayor Mulvale pointed 10 what she called "affluent, malnourished kids from busy households or kids forgotten from failed relationships" as being the most yul- nerable. According t0 a 1995 Addiction Research Foundation study, municipalities wiîh aleohol policies have 61.4 per cent less underage drinking, 54.5 per cent Iess van- dalism, 36.4 per cent fewer police inter- ventions, 31.8 per cent fewer public com- plaints and a host of lesser advantages. 15 4*Ë NM -. ... ... 1N5fginINua~4&,ts .... .. ..........
