Kingsbury says higrh' school focus is on Burlington By TIM WHITNELL Special to The Champion Eiementary schools have aiready corne under close scrufiny in Halton, with t wo of themn due to close in 1998, and now public schooi board officiais wiil I um their attention to high schools. Trustees decided at iast week's board meeting f0 look into the cost of prepaning a report about an in-depth review of secondary schooi facilities t hroughout the region. Exactly which schools should be exnmined was the focus of debate. Burlington Trustee Diane Lebiovic jntroduced fthe onigi- nal motion with an eye to ail 17 high sehools in Halton being looked af in fermas of their student capacity, enrol- ment, program viability and the physi- cal condition of each. Ms Leblovic's rationale for the review was the realization that the ftfth year of high achool will be dis- confinued in the near future and t he full impact of other impending sec- ondary school reforms fromn the provincial govemment is not known. Milton Trustee Tim Kingsbury dis- Tim Kingsbury agreed with the direction of the sec- ondary school review, stating it should focus on Burlington only. He said, rot about 70 per cent capacity, some high schools should be closed in 1998. Otherwise, he said, he believes the Mike Harrs govemnment will penalize the board for operating under student capacity by taking away more of ifs educat ion funding. Oakville Trustece Penny Siebert concurred. 'We can dance ail around the issue but the fact is you have about 3,000 f00 many pupil places in Buriington. That's where the problem is,' said Ms Siebent, who bas suggesfed in the past the viabilit y of Aldershof High Sehool in the city's west end be re-cvaluated. Burlington Trustee Sandy Van Harten didn't like the idea of a study with such a narrow focus. 1I don't think if's fair f0 target Burlington," she said, noting demographies change over years. Ms Van Harten said there are -pockets" in north and east Halton, outside Burlington, where changes could be made to high schools. "Lef's examine everybody's navel aot t he same time," she said. To which a iaughing Oakviiie Trustee Linda Lane said, "But y'Ilu lind the lint is in Burlingfon." Oakvillc Trustee and vice-chair Debbie Marklew didn't agrec wit h t he emphasis on Burlingfon. -l won'f support this motion for one very big reason - White Oaks Secondary School. My schooi * bas 15 portables. We've needed a renovaf ion lèr 12 years. This motion doesn'f soive my problem." The Burlington-only secondary school review lost an 8-7 vote.
