The concert, titled An Afternoon of Exceptional Music, will feature four CMC finalists. The CMC is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to discovering, supporting and promoting young Canadian classical music students. It offers young musicians an opportunity to perform in a competitive setting. The four musicians who will perform at the Oakville concert are 13-year-old pianist Coco Ma, 13-year-old violinist Emma Meinrenken, 18-year-old pianist Yiwei Yao and soprano Andromahi Raptis. The CMC finalists will be joined at the concert by Appleby College students: 16-year-old pianist Torin Viger and 17-year-old singer Diana Jansen. Ma won first place in her category in the national finals of the CMC in 2009 and 2012. She had her Carnegie Hall debut at age nine, performed with the Toronto Sinfornietta Orchestra and the Academy Chamber Orchestra. Meinrenken has placed first in CMC competitions in the last three years. She played with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at age 10 and has performed as a soloist with several other orchestras. She is a three-time winner of the Sid Oue Memorial Scholarship for the most promising student. Raptis is a Greek-Canadian soprano who studied voice performance at the University of Toronto. In 2011, she was a national finalist at the CMC, the same year she sang the role of Ilia in Sumer Opera Lyric Theatre's production of Idomeneo. She has also sung for Opera Atelier in a number of productions. Yao has won the grand prize at the Markham Music Festival two years in a row and has consistently placed first at the Kiwanis Music Festival. He performed at Carnegie Hall in 2010 and was a 2011 CMC finalist. The Oakville concert runs from 2-4 p.m. The concert will be at Willis Hall at Appleby College, 540 Lakeshore Rd. W. Admission is free but donations will be accepted to the CMC Scholarship fund. The 29-student ensemble is currently staging its final production, called Merrily We Roll Along, which was written by George Forth with music and lyrics written by Stephen Sondheim. The production is guest-directed by Toronto Star theatre critic Richard Ouzounian. The show opened earlier this week and runs through to Saturday, April 20 at Macdonald-Heaslip Hall at the Oakville campus, 1430 Trafalgar Rd. The cast is comprised of students in the performance program, while the production, which includes costumes, props and set design, was done by the students at Sheridan's Technical Production for Theatre and Live Events program. Merrily We Roll Along starts in the present and moves backwards, tracing the lives of wealthy, but jaded composer Frank Shepard and his two estranged friends, Charley and Mary. The three, early in their career, face bright futures. They are all young, talented and enthusiastic. Their friendship, however, becomes contested over a 20-year period of personal and professional milestones, ambition and fate. The show has a mix of evening and matinee showings.
