Oakville hospital gets $600K shot in arm for staff training by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 5 | Thursday, April 4, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) employees will have the opportunity to enhance their skills and patient care thanks to a $600,000 grant from TD Bank Group. The funds that will support the transition to the new Oakville hospital and advanced health education, was presented to the Oakville Hospital Foundation Tuesday, during a presentation at OTMH. "Here at OTMH, we are blessed to have a stellar team of healthcare professionals dedicated to providing the very best care to our patients," said Tina Triano, Oakville Hospital Foundation CEO. "Now, thanks to TD Bank Financial Group, we will be able to create a knowledge-based work environment for our caregivers to do what they do best and that is to save lives." With an increased aging demographic, Chief Nursing Officer Sylvia Rodgers said a portion of TD's gift would help facilitate a twopart workshop series, which will allow health care practitioners to develop expertise in elderly patient care. Another portion of the gift will address the need to continually advance the skills and knowledge of nurses and caregivers by providing tuition support for formal education programs. Rodgers said that through the grant, nurses and registered nurses at OTMH can receive tuition support for baccalaureate degrees, master's degrees, nurse practitioner programs or clinical specialty programs, which could provide expertise in the anesthesia, emergency and oncology fields. "On behalf of all of the staff at Halton Healthcare Services (HHS) and the Oakville hospital, I can't thank you enough for supporting these crucial education needs," said Rodgers. "We literally would not be able to move these initiatives forward at this pace without your gift and we are truly grateful to you." Registered Nurse Laura Lee said such grants allowed her to further her education. Where she once kept opinions to herself, Lee said her K a r a s t a n A r e a R u g s · What we liked about this program, in particular, is that it is a teaching hospital in an evolving growing community, a progressive healthcare centre looking out for its own future and providing for the community that is supports. TD Bank Group Deputy Chair and former Premier of New Brunswick Frank McKenna said TD chose to support OTMH because they believe the enhanced health education can really make a difference in this community. H a r d w o o d He also pointed out that having the most high tech hospital in the world means little without the highly trained health care staff to go with it. "TD is very focused on developing the human resource involved in health care delivery across the country," said McKenna. "What we liked about this program, in particular, is that it is a teaching hospital in an evolving growing community, a progressive health care centre looking out for its own future and providing for the community that it supports." McKenna said Tuesday's donation builds upon TD's ongoing commitment to support a quality health care system in Canada through its TD grants of medical excellence for Canadian hospitals and healthcare centres. Oakville Mayor Rob Burton praised TD's actions during the presentation. "I love the way you have focused on education. My mother taught me that education is the only real edge you have in life and I believe that deep down with every fiber of my being," he said. "To see a bank get behind education to build the strength we have in our people just means so much to me."
