Students of Anderson have mixed feelings about the resigna- tion of Canada's prime minister. The response was mainly a positive one, and, on the whole, students have a brighter outlook on Canada. No one condones some of the decisons that Mulroney made over the past eight years but certainly no one can say that they would have done better or diferently had they been in the same position. "I have done my very best for my countr.y," the former prime minister said. I asked some students of Anderson what their opinion was of Brian Mulroney's reign over Canada: "I think he tried his best in an economy that was going downhill already " says OAC student Alene Quinn. "I don't think he's looked at the needs of the average people...In regards to the Char- lottetown Agreement it seems that he only wanted an historical name and when he didn't get it. .he quit," says OAC student PaulaGrifTth. "I think that he did a pretty good job considering that the Liberals put us into debt,» says grade 12 student Darin Keeler. "Overall I think that he did a good job. I like the free-trade agreement. The GST was a good idea but at the wrong time,» says grade 12 student Joel Gregoire. Not everyone was critical of Mulroney. Wo knows what this country would be like today if you or I had been prime minister over the past eight years. Feb. 25 (last Thursday) Ander- son held its annual dating game. In the first round contestants Keith Manship, Ben Land and Adam Houston were riddled with questions by Muffy (her real name is Krista Parker). Besides answering the ques- tions, each had to sing their favourite love song for her. Muffy chose Adam Houston because he was the best singer. In the second round Samer Abdelnour questioned contes- tants Deirdre Hall, Stephanie Duffy and Fawna Reesor. Duffy was the lucky lady cho- sen because "She knows how to answer a good mosquito ques- tion,»says Abdelnour. The two couples each dinner for two at Pickl been told that they're dating. The furor Bill Clinton has caused in the United States over hie proposed lifting of the ban on gays in the military has prompted me to voice my own opinion on the issue of homosexuality. It has prompted me to ask: Does the Constitution mean anything to the American people? The recent public outrage in the U.S. has led me to answer: obviously not. This document that guarantees unconditional equality to all, regardless of race or religion, seems only to be used as a manipulative tool for those in positions of power pursuing their own ends. The constitution of the military, so deeply rooted in American society, is based on the preservation of their nation's asic freedoms and yet, with ugly displays of ignorance and violence, has promoted prejudice at and hatred against those with a lay, different sexual orientation than is considered politically correct. The military is condemning and oppressing a portion of the society they are sworn to protect. Is this not a contradiction to the founding principles of their country? This problem is not, however, confined strictly to our neighbour's south of the border. On a smaller scale, but nonetheless disturbing, is something that took place in my old high school last year. An apparently upstanding man of my community, whom I knew won a personally, complained and had les. I'vesome pamphlets removed from double- the public health information rack on display for the benefit of the students who would be too embarassed to ask questions on various topics. The cover of these banished pamphlets showed two men embracing, and this self-righteous visitor found the pictures offensive and believed they encouraged a wrongful image of sex to impressionable young people. What outrages me is that no regard was taken for the feelings of the students, no anonymous poll was taken about whether this information was wanted or helpful, and the statistics on the number of gay students in high schools today was not taken into account. This is a time in our lives when we are learning how to form our own opinions and speak out for what is right and just -- and my conscience is telling me that these kinds of malignantly ignorant attitudes that are prevalent in our homophobic society are divisive and hurtful. At Trafalgar Castle School, because of the culturally diverse population, open-mindedness is strongly urged. One of the lessons I've learned thus far is that I cannot judge someone else's lifestyle until I have experienced it. STM The War Amps much to DO.5 Lucie Rochette ST. It's starting to warm up out there (finally). On Tuesday, Feb 23, a history class and the law class went to Ottawa to speak to Ontario rid- ing MP Rene Soetens. Feb. 24 was Ash Wednesday so the students in the school participated in short ceremonies in their classes. Wednesday night, there was a well-attended parent's night for the enrolment of students now attending Corpus-Christi and Notre Dame de la Jeunesse ele- mentary schools. Thursday, Feb. 25 was a big day at school -- our talent show was held. Many people showed off their talents in front of the entire school. Much of the show was dedica- ted to the musical acts prepared by our numerous musicians. Those musicians did their interpretations of sonq like "'he One' by Elton John, lues d'un Business-man' by Celine Dion, 'I Will Always Love You' by Whit- ney Houston, 'End of the Road' by Boyz II Men, 'The Unforgiven' by Metallica, and 'Two Prin- cesses'by the Spin Doctors. There was a skit prepared te go along with the song, 'The Leader of the Pack.' Aiso our impro group presen- ted their version of 'Mar- ried...With Children.' Great job. guys, that was hilarious! We also had four girls go on stage and dance to'Stayin' Alive In between acts, members of the student council asked unsus- pecting members of the audience to go up on stage and participate in activities guaranteed to surpr- ise even the most alert indivi- dual. Because of the activities, Thursday was a non-uniform day (yeah!). Congratulations to everybody involved in the slightest way with the show. Everybody did a great job. Last weekend, two girls from the Jeunesse du Monde commit- tee at school went to Quebec City to participate in a workshop. Also this week, our senior girls' volleyball team went all the way to the semi-finals in Port Perry before being eliminated. Great job, girls, you should be proud. Well, gotta fly! A la prochaine.
