Around the world Whitby is advertised as pl1ace of busineS' What do Frankfurt, West Germany and Tokyo, Japan have in -common with Whitby, Canada? Well if you happen to be travelling in either of those two countries, you niight notice the 45-ft. biliboard. advertising Whitby as a place for business. "We have advertisemients al- over the world including hotels, airlines and ticket offices," says Jeannette Babington, Whitby's economic development officer. Babington is in charge of assisting companies as - they relocate or locate to the WVhitby area.* But. she, notes,' that the advertisements don't say Cali Jeannette Babington,' they say « Caîl the Mayor, Bob Attersley.' It is important that Whitby has an open door policy for industries," says Babington, who sits down with a company and finds out who they are when they show an interest in nioving to Whitby. "We find out their future goals. Whiftby is selective. We don't just take industry off the streets. Noxious industries don't fit in Whitby," says Babington, using Deconi as an example. (Decom Medical Waste Inc. applied to build a medical waste transfer station in Whitby, and after an environmental assesment hearing on the application, which was opposed by the Town and residents but was approved by the Province, Deconi withdrew the application and moved to Etobicoke.) .Babington says the majority of new industries that are moving to Whitby are health-oriented or linked to General Motors', new policy of just in time delivery. "We have a diversifled industrial sector' and the interesting thing is once a company moves or relocates here, a company that provides parts for the final product also moves here," says Babington. She says Whitby- is not in danger of running out of serviced industrial land thanks te the "forward planning"' of the Town and the Region. "The Region of Durham'7s planning. departnient is a great spporter of Whitby" says Babington. A report from Durham's planning department in Decemiber last year shows Whitby has 1950' acres of designated industrial land. 0f that antount, 980 acres are occupied, while another 740 acres, remnain vacant, A further 230 acres of land are non-developable because of such hazard constraints as fioodplains and steep siopes. The report also notes that of the 12,380 acres of industrial land in the reglon, 4,660 acres are occupied- leaving 6,870 acres vacant. By 2011, the report expects an additional 5,000 acres of land to be occupied. The report notesàthat the 401 corridor through Whitby and Oshawa will continue te attract industry as will a highway 407 corridor when it is built through the region.
