By MIKE JOHNSTON Free Press Staff Heavy truck traffic could be removed from Brock St. (Hwy. 12) in Whitby and Baldwin St. in Brooklin by designating Thickaon Rd. as Hwy. 12. This conclusion was reached by represen- tatives of the Minlstry of Transportation and Communications, the region, and the town at a meeting held August 12 to discuss the traffic problema. Representatives of the town were informed that trucks cannot be restricted from using Brock St. because it is designated as a highway and the only way to remove them was to redesignate Brock St. However, a report by the town's public works department shows that designating Thickson Rd. as Hwy. 12 and remnoving the heavy truck traffic could cause a new set of problems for merchants in the downtown area. They include: businesses such as gas stations and restaurants wanting compensation for the bass of business-, because Brock St. would no longer be designated as a highway, automobile traffic would also be likely to bypass it and even if Brock St. was no longer a highway trucks would stili be making deliveries ta the down- town core.
