Some of you might remember an article written by me in this column dated June 16, 1983. In it I stated that a puppy had been hit by a car In front of my house, and the Humane Society when called told me they dld not come in to the Brooklin area. I wc,i. dered at that time why, and where to go for help if the occassion should arise in the future. To brîng you up to date,In the July 20 issue of the Free Press, I read, wlth both amusement and anger, a letter wrltten by one T.I. Hughes, executive vice president of the Ontario Humane Society. I say amusement because I cannot Imagine anyone writing a letter to a newspaper on a subject of which they obvlously have so few facts. Secondly, I say anger because I take exception, nw motter how nlcely phrased, on being portrayed as both a fanatic frenzied femme and a liar te boot. I must preclude this article by stating that at no Urne have I had any direct contact with this T.I. Hughes. I bave not spoken to it, received a letter from it or met it. I do not mean to appear rude, but the writer has not identified themnselves as being maie or female. I guess we are supposed to know. The point la, any in- formation received by Hughes is at best second hand. One thing correct in the article was the fact that i was telephoned by Mrs. Lang, Supervisor of the Whltby Shelter. It was at an extremely busy time sème two weeks after the incident of the "injured animal". She asked what had happened and I ex- plained. 1 teld her the truth, I could not recali the exact date but thought it was-a Thursday night. She, at that time asked if it could have been Wednesday or Friday. Again, i told her the truth, I thought it was Thursday, and sug gested she check with the "Vet" to confirmn the actual date. As it turns out I was wrong. It was Friday. We ail makte mistakes but this was the- only mistake 1 made concerning the incident. If you will look in your telephone directory you will note there is no listing anywhere for the Toronto branch. I stated at that time I called the Thlckson Road branch but that statement was ob- vlously ignored. I do not lie. I have no reason to. If I make mistakes I apologize. This time there bas been no mistake. I called the Ontario Humane Society in front of two witnesses and was told by the an- swerlng service that they dld not go into Brooklin. It,'s as simple as that. When told by this government agency, I believed. Mrs. Lang, who I have known and respected for many years, was told in our conversation by me that I had no axe to grlnd with the employees. They do a fantastîc job with the smail amount of money they have to work wlth. That stili stands. It was whatever answering service they use that I feit should have been reprlrnanded. I had occassion te cail them at approxlmately 7 p.m. on a Frlday evening,- weil after regular staff closing hours. Hughes indlcated that as inquiry was instituted and there was nu way my cail could.have been made as there was no record of it ever being received. I wonder. If an answering service operator is negligent enough te tell me that the "Society" does not come into Brooklln, la she responsible enough to f111 out the paper work in- dlcating, that the cail was received? Besides, *'why would she make a record 0f a cail that she dld nothing about? Although Hughes answered by article, there were nu answers to the problem in the letter submitted. If in the same predicament again what would I do. You can be certain I wil thlnk to get the name and address of the person, with whom I arn speaking. You see, according to Hughes, I have nothing te substantiate by ailegations. It makes the brain quiver to wonder why a person like this should think I would want to.lie. What reason would I have? Let's face it, this'la not the New York Times or theBoston Herald. I get nu satisfaction from lies. I ney'er have and I neyer wiIl. The icing on the cake was the inference that because I arn a woman I completely feil apart and was "too upset to remnember". Horsefeathers 1 I do not get angry very often, but right now I arn fuming. I wonder if Hughes was. over in the armed forces. A go military person. knows they must at ail times guard their flanks and protect their rear. If things run true to form, we can expect another letter te appear in another six weeks .... Keep wat- ching around 'Labour Day. In 1982, humane society staff there took care of more than 6,000 animaIs, including dogs, cats, many kinds of wildllfe and even a pig. While just over 2,500 of those animaIs were either picked up as strays or were aban- doned, 3,506 of them were actually brought ln by owner te be put up for adoption or, falling that, euthanasia. The Ontario Humane Society has long been a proponent of educating pet owners and potential owners about the responsibility involved in takting on the care of animais. The number of animals brought in by owners points te the need for much more education la this area, a challenge for everyone who enjoys animais and the companionship they provide. In ordàer to provide a base for. a humane education program, the Durham Branch 'is plannin on putting the fnhigtouches te a building located on. shelter property. This building la the only une that bas been saved fromn Camp X, the World War Two spy camp la Whitby that was the basis for the book A Man Cailed Intrepid. Purchased and donated to the humane movement many years ago by Miss, Muriel-l Sissons of Whitby, the building needs some in- terior work before it.is ready for use by the public, work that has been estimated to cost about $10e000. Tu raise money for the project, the Durham Branch wil hold a Giant yard Sale on Sunday, August 7, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the shelter on Thickson's Road, jugt north of Taunton Road, Whitby. By special arrangement, the shelter wil be open fromn 12 noon to 4 p.m. 50 The Whitby Yacht Club will hold an open regatta July 30, 31 and Augusti1.
