Theatre Br. Weekdays - One Compete Show at 7:05 A short ime ago, a group of movie columnists gathered in Memphis, to review the new Elvis P.resley movie feature, "This Is Elvis." They visited Graceland, the mansion Elvis lived in when he was alive. It is sad to see this beautiful home falling into decay, they write. The place is unkept, some of the paint peeling off the walls, and the once beautiful grounds now ragged. A sister of Elvis' mother, Delta Mae, age,80, is the only one living in the big house now, and she rarely ventures out. Across the street there is a tacky set-up of stands where some persons hawk cheap souvenirs such as mugs, flags, pins and pictures, al containing the name and photo of Elvis. Several of the people who worked with and hung around Elvis are stili on the scene. Jerry Schilling for example, who regrets that he did flot get Elvis off the pilîs. He says that Elvis always thought of* drugs as something you bought on a street corner, flot somnething prescribed by your doctor. He still gets a little angry at the thought of Elvis dying. When he first heard the news he broke his hand by driving his fist into the wall of the home that Elvis had given him. In his lîfetime, Elvis gave away over 1,000 cars. If he got angry with one of bis staff, he usually fired them on the spot, then within a few days, rehired them and made them a gift of a new automobile. Joe Espositio was another who spent 20 years with Elvis. He feels that Elvis died because he could not find love, and does flot agree with the theory that pilîs to go to sleep with, and pilîs to wake up with, eventually bloated and destroyed the man idolized by millions. And, of course, in the group still at Memphis are lawyers and accountants who look after the Presley Estate. Actually, Elvis is bigger business dead than he was alive. The new movie splices some rare footage with some long-forgotten home movies f ound in the Presley basement. The sequences are connected with acting by three Elvis look-alikes, David Scott, Boensch and John Warren. The film BEFORE shows how Elvis gradually sank, suicide in slow motion, before the eyes of gun- dressed muscle and bone who stood between Elvis and the real world. Sam Phillips, owner of Sam Studioes was the first (o record Elvis. He sold the contrat to RCA for $35,M00, thinking it was so much money no one would be fool enough to take it. He feels that if Elvis had been given some good, hard advice things mights have been dif- ferent. But, Elvis neyer got it. Fans still come to Graceland to place flowers, teddy bears and hound dogs on his grave. He may be gone, but he's certainly not forgotten.
