Sites for the movie included the tomb of the boy king Tutankhamum, and it was the very first time a film crew was ever allowed to work inside. An Egyption actor, Mohamed Sobeih, cast as a tomb robber - the type of people the curse was designed to destroy and repel from the fabulous treasures buried with the living gods - died in a car crash before he could even appear in front of the cameras. The movie, made at a cost of $10 million, 10w today compared to some movie budgets, was made to enter- tain, and believe it or not, even contains some comedy, such as a car chase through the streets of Luxor. Director Franklin Schaf- fner, hauling on a. large black cigar, and being thousands of miles away from the tomb, can laugh at the subject of the curse, especially after just having finished a rich meal in a luxury hotel on this side of the ocean*. He considers such things as happened to Sobeih as pure coincidence, 110 ,14 WIN A TRIP FOR TWO TO WHEELING, WIEST VIRGINIA [AR lION!e Mo0 LENT 8:30 p.m. N N 401 X 10> (:1x"1% \\ .29«i 8171 I Watermill Restaurant & Tavern Hwy 12, N. of Manchester 9 85-3766 M 10 DalIy Specials and considers such things as curses nothing more than legends. brne thing that did happen during the making of the film, that more or less threw Schaffner and the rest of the cast, was the impulsive marriage of star Lesley- Anne Down to an in- significant but suave and handsoine third assistant director, who early each morning would approach Schaffner with the question, "will that be coffee or tea, sir? " Apparently Schaffner and the crew were astounded when the star performer cast off a 1-year relation- ship with her former lover, writer-actor Bruce Robin- son. Schaffner wondered what would happen the next morning after the bombshell marriage between Lesley- Anne and Gabriel, the third assistant, and got a further surprise when Gabriel ap- peared right on the dot with the question, "will that be coffee or tea, sir?. Despite his film credits and the stars he has worked with, Schaffner is not a flamboyant character. Ac- tually, he is a f amily man, who for the most part, lives a quiet lîfe in Beverly Hilîs with his wife and two daughters. A TV-trained director who made his debut in 1963, Schaffner has worked with such names as Dustin Hof- fman, George C. Scott, Gregory Peck, Charlton* Heston, Steve McQueen, Sir Laurence Olivier and Joan- ne Woodward. Lesley-Anne Down is given much credit for the success of the film, due to her professionalism, humour and beauty. The whole movie of Sphinx is considered by the director to be an entertainment romp, and those responsible for it would like to think that people will corne away from it feeling their money for an evening's outing wilI have been well spent. We think you will enjoy it. Colleetor wanted Durham Regional Council will entertain a recommen- dation from its finance committee to hire a collector for water and sewer accoun- ts on a temporary basis. The finance committee decided to make the recommendatioei last week after receiving a report that stated a collector is required for "hard" accounts. -1 1 1 1
