Hospital Investiga tion S tory Not True Says Prov.Official A recent story in the Oshawa Times stated that "Provincial officials have st- arted an investigation into alleged assaults involving ch- ildren in the mental retarda- tion unit of the Whitby Psy- chiatric Hospital". This story, that appeared last Saturday, also stated that John Maynard, director of the psychiatric branch of the Ontario ministry of health had ordered the investigation. But Mr. Maynard told the Free Press Monday that he had NOT ordered an investi- gation. He said "if an investi- gation is needed it will occur". And he pointed out that ANYTIME any allegations are made, however unsub- stantiated, the ministry al- ways looked into them, and- said "any accusations of this type should be very carefully followed up". Mr. Maynard told the Free Press "what I said was that I would send somebody to investigate if necessary". Hospital adminstrator,Mil- ton J. Fisher said that he 'Y, Elects Officers The Whitby YMCA held its annual meeting last Friday night at Henry Street High School, and élected the 1974 sdate of officers. Questioned about "alleg- ed assaults", Mr. Fisher said that there is an older boy "we have bgen having diffi- culties with", who apparent- ly cut another boys hair, and "a child was found with blood on his pyjamas,. but was apparently only a nose bleed" indicating that the boy was believed to have fall- en. Mr. Fisher said that there had been one death in the unit last November, but said that the boy died of pneu- monia in J.O. Ruddy Hos- pital. This mental retardation unit is about a year and a half old, and houses about 50 children in the old nurses' residence. The children are all from the area, and the number is expected to in- Town Council received a presentation Monday night on the proposed Iroquois Park Swimming Pool. Whitby architect Alan Wil- cox, and a representative of Canadian Swimming Pool De- sign Services, John Loring, presented to council their concept of the new pool. They proposed a two sw- imming pool set up with the main pool being 82 ft., 1/2" long by 42 ft. wide (six lanes), -with depth ranging froi 3 ft. 6 inches to 10 ft. 6 inches, and having a 1 metre diving board. The smaller pool would be 35 ft. long by 20 ft. wide with depth rangir g from 2 ft. 6 inches to 3 ft. 6 inches. "Each pool will be a mon- olithic reinforced concrete shell on a crushed stone bed with underdrain and dewat- ering lines as well as hydros- tatic relief valves to prevent flotation during high water table conditions." The pre- sentation also stated that "the interior finish of both pool tanks will consist of white marmorite along with ceramic tile for the coping, nosing, under-apron, racing line mar- kings, end targets and test circle. The marmorite will carry a full 2-year guarantee plus a further 3-year pro- rata guarantee". 'Other equipment' would include stainless steel deck equipment, a one-metre tow- er with 16 foot maxiflex board, four grab rails and two guard chairs, and for the smaller pool, two ladders. Provision will also be made for starting platforms, stan-' chion posts, pacer clocks and handicapped lifter. Complete safety and maintenance equi- pment will also be provided. It was presumed that this proposal would be within the $600,000 budget. Councillor Tom Edwards said "we have an abundance of divers in this area" and said that he felt that it was a lot of money to pay for a one diving board pool and that he was going to oppose the proposal. Coun. Edwards felt that a 3-metre diving board should be included. Mr. Loring said that as a very rough guess he would estimate the cost of adding a 3-metre board would be $30 - $40,000 extra because it would require a higher building (six or seven feet higher), a deeper and wider pool. Alan Wilcox said that an- other six or seven feet higher wouldn't affect the nesthetics of the building in relation to the arena, but would pro- bably strengthen it. - Mayor Des Newman spoke for the addition of the 3- metre board sayings that he thought "it would be a much better vaue". Recreation director Gerry Gellette said "it's been my experience that very few peo- ple know how to use such a board." He pointed out that "most people just climb up, hold their nose and jump off". He also said -that he thought there were very few people in the region capable of using anything over a 1 - metre board. Coun. Edward suggested that Mr. Gellette should visit some of the pools in the area and see all the divers in the area including three wo- men who are in the top ten divers in the world. A motion came forward from Coun. Edwards to in- clude the board, but failed. A new motion to advise Can- adian Swimming Pool Design Services to proceed on to the next step (detailed draw- ings), and amended by Mayor Newman to include the link between the pool and the arena not to exceed $10,000., was subsequently passed. Having lost the original motion to include the 3- metre board, Mayor Newman put a motion through for the Operations Committee, in conjunction with' C.S.P. D.S. to report to council on the actual cost of a 3-metre diving board for council in- formation. Coun. Edwards got the last word saying "What we're doing here is making a $600,000 mistake. I'm con- fident that the people of Whitby are going to have something less than the peo- ple of Oshawa and Ajax." crease to8. Sae oo $- e lell PrcàuveyPg CIRCLE TAXI 128 BROCK ST. N.
