citizens between the ages of to as far as out door activity is concerned Adapting themselves to atmospheric conditions they have proceeded to move in doors with restaurants billiard rooms and bowling alleys taking- the brunt of their onslaught We are talking about the fine art of leaning And we do not know whether to classify it as a sport or a disease Perhaps we are being unfair in our observations of this younger generation along these lines Maybe older generations were afflicted to the same extent but it was never as glaring as in the past few years If a young man stands erect these days he is rather admired by oldsters as it looks like he can look after himself He appears alert ready for job opportunities and able to give a hand to his community Alas there are all too few of this rare breed in our midst today and they are rapidly falling into the American Indians class a vanishing race From close observation we have noticed several styles of leaning They range all the way from com plete body flop resting on both elbows lo the rather ordinary that many young sters prefer Clothes racks with convenient hooks are ideal for the one hand and arm position while many go all the way wrapping both hands and arms around a conventional hall tree Store counters and restaurant booths are both handy vehicles for full expression of these youngsters attitude toward life Outdoors in fine weather street lamp posts store fronts auto fenders and hoods and steps of stores absorb the name type of punishment Older fellows brought up in the and throw out your chest era are utterly disgusted with the present generation Those who are old enough to have served with the armed forces in the last conflict or have had some physical training shake their heads and wonder where the present crop of lads are going to get their backbone they arent standing erect long enough to develop one Naturally there are exceptions among our youngsters and they stand out above the crowd with their get up and go From this lackadaisical attitude the only jossiblc conclusion that many older people can arrive at is that these leaner do not want to work Most of I hem have left their school days behind often before gradua tion and seem to think that the world owes them a liv ing And they arc the loudest in their demands for recreational facilities and consideration in many fields They complain that work is unavailable A big per centage of the time they havent looked for a job But they want good money and easy hours when on oppor tunity presents itself What have they to offer Just their two hands no trade not enough education no spe cial skill but with exalted ideas of what their services are worth Many parents are gullible enough to accept the excuses of these leaning specialists that there is no work not enough pay poor working conditions just anything to avoid honest toil They lean on their Pop and Mom will see we have enough spending money they lean on their working friends they lean on the merchants who put up with their lazy presence and they lean on life in general We are spawning and tolerating a leaning generation who if not cheeked will be of little use to themselves or our country It is just about time that the props were uncere moniously knocked from beneath these new parasites on society Maybe compulsory service in the armed forces is the answer but some of the good ones would pay with a few years of their lives along with the lazy youngsters Perhaps the parental old fashioned wood shed treatment is the solution It might do more any other disciplinary action along with a cut in the best to Let its face it the leaning generation is as real a problem as our slums roads planning plants and other civic projects Service clubs are trying then- best to aid in the rejuvenation of this strata of young sters and having some success Other agencies are try ing too with every means at their command But the groundwork will have to be done by the workhorses of every generation the parents get them up in the morning before noon ration the spending money as Dad cant go on doling it out forever lay on the switch when necessary and in general snap them out of the lethargy most of them are in right now Most of all stop making for The observing public knows Junior is lazy so quit covering up for him Parents dont live forever and excuses are a poor legacy to pass on to Juniors wife if he enters wedded life Make him stand on his own feet and the community will notice the difference and our country will benefit from bis new outlook on life IGNORANCE IS BLISS Now that the hullabaloo of municipal elections is over it might be time for a comment on that phrase Vote as you like but vote We suspect that the choice of candidates as far a great number of the electorate was concerned could be compared with gong to the races and picking a winner with a pin Some have been known to hit the jackpot this way but it is not a me thod recommended for the selection of local government In an effort to do the right thing by the community in which they live many con hut misguided souls can do more damage than good by voting for an indivi dual or an issue on which he or she has no knowledge In the polling stations they thoughtfully suck the end of their pencils and heit Kingly put a cross against a name they vaguely ember hearing somewhere We would prefer to see the phrase reworded Vote as you like but know LIFE BLOOD GOING CHEAP and pie biles and plenty of nets blocks lets Our Readers Write As a postscript to recent will be forced eventually as a concession to progress and the pressures of competition to do like- arc not suggesting that the sweat shops of yesteryear reinstituted when a clerk was expected to work
