togethers Chef said OPTIMISM Hospital For Sick Children Asks For Help From Its Many Friends The many supporters of the Hospital for Sick Children once again are being asked to help meet the annual operating loss by supporting its Christmas appeal This year careful management has kept the hospitals deficit at of operating costs or J Grant chairman of the Board of Trustees said in announcing the hospitals annual Christmas appeal for funds Two reasons account for the hospitals inevitable annual defi cit First the revenue from all sources patients investments es tates and grants is not sufficient to meet the rising costs of care and treatment Secondly more and more children each year are coming to the hospital where no child knocks in vain from across Ontario and many other sections of Canada This year more than bedpatients were admitted and some treatments provided for outpatients and emergencies Mr said This means that on the average one child is admitted to the hospital every half hour hours a day Some employees and many volun teer workers are required to give proper care to these children Advances in treatment and sur gery are constantly being made at the hospital Mr said In the case of treatment he re ferred to the increasing number of chronic disorders once consid ered incurable which arc now being treated successfully To day many acute infections which until recently required hospital care can now be handled in the homo or outpatients clinic mak ing additional hospital beds avail able for more seriously ill pa tients he said One of the most important phases of surgery is the rehabili tation of injured and deformed children Mr said It is interesting to note that one out of every four children entering the hospitals operating rooms docs so for reconstructive sur gery Advanced work is now be ing done with harelips club feet and damaged hearts to name on ly a few Last year the hospital also con ducted many major research pro jects Promising research is now being done on a common but im portant group of childrens dis eases such as sore throats coughs cold and it is hoped that a recent discovery may lead to the prevention of some of these common respira tory diseases In the new Metabolic Ward one of the few of its kind in a child rens hospital research workers are trying to discover causes of disease rickets and nutri tional disorders as well as trying to improve methods of treating diabetes jaundice kidney disease and a variety of other diseases The increased cost and scope of the hospitals varied services to gether with the greater number of children who come to the hos pital each year is the reason for the operating deficit Mr Glasseo said Address of the Hospital for Sick Children is 555 University Avenue Toronto Page of others as you are about your own from the Optimist Creed Once again it is the Christmas season that time of year reflected in happy holidays bright and gay decorations coloured lights tin sel holly and mistletoe and chil dren with bright expectant fac es a joyous warmth of Peace on earth goodwill toward men There is however a deeper meaning to Christmas than the exchanging of gifts and the en joyment of the fun and frolic Christmas gives us the opportun ity of remembering what tho day really stands for of reestab lishing our faith and hope in Him who came as the Prince of Peace to a troubled world of renewing our friendships and fellowships and becoming more tolerant of our fellow man Christmas was the happiest time of year when wc were chil dren and enjoyed the dream that all our wishes could be stuffed in to the big empty stocking hung by the fireplace And now Now that our wants can no longer be jammed into our rocks because you cant tack world peace to the fireplace the season is still the happiest time of the year know that the world needs Christmas and the spirit of Chris tmas We need the spiritual re freshment which attends a wide spread aware ness of the Peace on earth good will to men message As true Optimist directed by the Optimist Creed to think on ly of the best to work only for the best and expect only the best we take a particular joy in the Christmas season because it in spires people to put forth their very best During this season can appreciate how pleasant our associations arc when a great many people practice the best tenet of the Creed by which try to live In this atmosphere we gather renewed energy for spreading the principles of Opti mist philosophy Thus Christmas gives us Optimist Club of Newmarket the opportunity of expressing Seasons Greetings to you May the mean ing of Christmas be deeper its friendships stronger and its hop es brighter than ever before Yours In optimism Ken Stephens The Common Round CHRISTMAS The Queen Elizabeth Islands lying north of the great eastwest passage and belonging to Canada are the most northerly lands in North America The proper observance of Christmas seems to be a subject which gives rise to endless con troversy Some people object to Santa Claus some think we are putting pagan practices before Christian observances while still others seem to feel it is so com mercialized that nothing of the real meaning is left To me Christmas is as it has been from earliest childhood a time of wonder and joyous beau ty I still believe in the Santa Claus of my childhood the belief that Santa St Nicholas Kris Kringle or whatever you like to call htm Is a bencficient spirit at Christmas time doing the Christ Childs work among chil dren I think it a pity to con fuse childrens minds with a San ta Claus on every corner and I hope that will die out but no one can take away my remembered delight when I saw what Santa had brought me as a child That was one mystery Then there was and is now the beautiful and marvellous mystery of Christmas Day It is a Joy to hear the church bells ringing on Christmas morning their melody chiming in with the sleigh bells on the cutters of all the out-of- town folk hastening in to join the Christmas service and to partake of the Christmas communion Some very vocal people seem think dress up Christmas too much but is there anything lovelier than to look out on Christmas Eve This I have done from a child and then it was not so brilliant as now But there was the snow on the housetops and the stars which always seem to me to be brighter on Christ mas Eve and the lighted houses and the hurrying people Now we have that and added to it the brilliant trees in nearly every window and the sound of carols everywhere read what one man said that all these trappings took away from the grim reality of the cold stable where only the beasts fur nished any warmth Did he for get the radiant star and the an gels message and the angels chorus What can be more wonderful more beautiful than to know we are about to celebrate the birth day of the Son of God We celebrate lesser birthdays with pomp and circumstance why not the birthday that chang ed the world One is sorry and ashamed of Ihe excesses that mask themselves as Christmas festivities and one can hope that in time they will be no longer with us but let us keep our belief in every lovely thing which belongs to Christmas And here let me wish for the edi tor and staff of the Era and Ex press especially the poor soul who deciphers my hieroglyphics and to all the readers of this col umn a Christmas full of joy and good cheer Christmas Slumber Song Sleep my Jesus sleep The ox and the ass have gone to steep The little lambs have ceased to bleat The shepherds have gone to watch their
