long distance call the operator has at her dis posal return and collect key which enable her to oper ate the coin collector relay at the particular public telephone where the customer ha placed hi same way and the money drops into the coin box When you call Long Distance from a public telephone the op erator know immediately you are calling from a public tele phone These are confined to certain Hell were alive today he would not be too greatly surprised at the new devices which feature mo dern telephone service From the moment when hi dream of talking over wire became a re ality with the first crude instru ment he visualiied Its applica tion on a universal scale Bell was born in Edinburgh Scotland on March 3 1847 and before he died in August he had seen an immense com munications system blossom from ihe tiny seed he planted only fortysix years before Bells father Professor Alex ander Melville Doll had been a teacher of elocution and was the inventor of phonetic alphabet which he called Visible Speech This consisted of a series of symbol indicating the positions the speaking organs take in uttering different sounds It was most useful in teaching the deaf to speak Graham Hell followed in his father footsteps reasons of health he came to Canada in I WO to join his family which had settled near Ontario a short time before lie regain ed his health and in took up his fathers work instructing teachers of deaf children in the use of Visible Speech at and other American cities It was a lucky combination of a sparetime interest and his daily work with the deaf that started Bell thinking on the lines thai led lo the telephone idea He was interested in telegraphy and with his knowledge of sound and speech began to con template the possibility of speech being transmitted over a wire by electricity Historic Conception During a summer holiday at Ontario in 1H74 Hell outlined to lit father his now his toric corvee ion If I could make a current of electricity vary in intensity precisely as the air varies in density during pro duction of a sound I should be able to transmit speech telegra phically Haunted by the idea Roll work ed at it unremittingly and devised in hi first crude telephone The Gallows Frame It was able to transmit only meaningless sounds Endless hours of work and thought followed until in March 1876 the first intelligible sentence was transmitted over wire Success Dell was experimenting with a diaphragm hold over a tiny cup of dilute acid Suspended from the diaphragm and dipping into the acid was a thin wire Cur rent flowed from a battery into the suspended wire through Ihc acid into a second wire and along it to the receiver In another room As a sound caused the diaphragm to vibrate the first wire was low ered into the acid to a depth de pendent on the of the vi bration The depth of immersion of the wire determined the amount of current which could flow through the acid Conse quently the electric current flow ing through circuit varied in intensity with the vibrations of the diaphragm At the receiver end of the circuit were a magnet and another diaphragm so arrang ed that the varying current caus ed magnet to exert a varying pull on the diaphragm and re produce the original vibrations It was while experimenting with this device on the evening of March that Bell spill ed some of acid on his trous ers and exclaimed Mr Watson come here I want you Wat son at the receiver in another room heard the words distinct ly coming from the receiver and rushed to tell the young inventor of hi success Bell give the first public de monstration of his successful tel ephone at the Centennial Exposi tion in Philadelphia on June 25 Only two distinguished vi sitors the of and Sir William p n later Lord Kelvin were openly enthu siastic Despite skepticism of the majority the interest of these two men one a monarch and the other the worlds most eminent electrical scientist fo cused attention on inventor First Cult On August 10th of that year Bell conducted the first success- Alexander Graham Bell Inven tor of the telephone ful oneway long distance tele phone test in the world from to Paris Ontario The distance between the two place was only eight mile but the voice currents had to lie trans mitted from lo Parts via Toronto where the battery supply was located thus the cir cuit actually totalled about miles
