as a public school needs a Home and School association and a church needs a WA so I think a public library needs a group to work In it Interests This group would not do the work of the board It would not do the work of the staff Mrs Downey explained But it wou ld encourage support for the lib rary It would attempt to create interest in the library It would stimulate the general public and make people aware of the libr ary and Its needs And It would Interpret the librarys work to the ordinary taxpayer she add cd Mrs Downey suggested that such a group might meet once a month to discuss the aims and purposes of the library and what it could do to help It might money for some specific project or create interest in it Mrs Dow ney said adding that she firmly believes the library should be supported by taxes But some times a little judicious pump- priming starts the pump flow ing freely Mrs Downey comm ented In October Mrs Downey made a return visit to the Library board having in the meantime contacted the American Library association the University of Toronto Library School and oth er sources for information re garding the formation a Fri ends of the Library group in Newmarket She told the board that the American Library association had set up a committee to en courage the growth of addition al Friends of the Library groups The association explained the function of such groups as to en tourage the organization of cit izen interest support and under standing of the library services and needs Librarians and trustees con sidering the organization of a Friends group continued Mrs Downey sometimes ask what such groups accomplish Are they really worthwhile The record is impressive The literature of the Friends of the Library groups is full of enthusiastic accounts
