more adult assistance in Guide and Brownie work The Newmarket Era and Express Thursday May Pag A record number of people from other countries visited Canada in the total num ber of visits being 26300000 HnHHnhmmiiiliiM The taking of the pelts of wild furbearing animals in Canada In the season was worth During the area planted to commercial vegetables in Canada was acres an in crease of 14 percent over Use Era Express Classifieds In turning unwanted articles into cash An idea would be out of place down there That remark was made by one of our local sports men at Tuesdays Recreation Commission meeting Boy did he take the words right out of my mouth This harpoon was aimed at the Newmarket arena commission who guide the des tinies of our socalled community arena What brought about this dis cussion on the arena with sum mer here Weil the Newmarket minor lacrosse association was promised at one stage that they could have the arena free of charge for thoir games condi tioning exercises and practices On this assumption the New market Canadian Legion sports men graciously agreed to sponsor the complete minor lacrosse pro gram That was all very fine Messrs Matt Walsh Bob Ren ville and the lacrosse organizers were because approxi mately boys had signed on to play lacrosse Then came the bombshell The arena commission had a change of heart and advised the executive they would have to pay per hour for the use of the area Why 400 per hour asked the minor lacrosse executive Be sides lighting which will not bo required half the time nothing else is needed except someone to open the arena The arena man ager is paid on a yearly basis so there shouldnt be any trouble on that score This writer is informed the arena will be used on Thursday nights for wrestling and on Fri days on three occasions for dances during the summer What about the other periods arena to have a sign on it to be looked at but not used I would refer you to tax facts which came with your tax bill In the taxpayers of this community dug down in their jeans for This year 350000 has been budgeted to cover the arena deficit It is lime you you and yours truly and I do mean every taxpayer got up and asked for a change in the arena setup When the Commission is spending this much of our money it is time they were an elected body not an appointed body You cant tell me for one min ute that the arena cannot bo op erated at a profit It can be cause other arenas with the same financial obligations including debentures etc are doing it Other arenas with the same overhead show a profit and al low the minor hockey and la crosse teams etc the use of the arena free until they reach the playoff stage Why cant the same he done here Frankly this writer feels because of lousy promotion a scarcity of new ideas a Commission that has had the same members too long and poor public relations You wilt be hearing more on this subject in the next weeks KING CITY LOSES King City Lake Maries ran into a double portion of trouble as they opened play in the Peel- York Softball league Starting on the road Thursday the Hallmen were tripped by Richmond Hill The Hillmcn spoiled King Citys home opener Monday by Scout halt on Monday May 2 Mrs Hayes dis trict commissioner presented them with their wings These wings are symbolic of their achievement becoming Gol den Hand Brownies and passing other necessary
