Ma arranging as an art changing It would be Amazing if it were not in a World where everything else Changes all the time from styles in clothing to styles in food from styles In warfare to styles transportation from style In manners to styles in education it is only natural that flower ar rangement which influenced much by how live what furnishings we have around us end what we think is beautiful differ from what it was 20 yearn ago 5 This week there are many varieties flowers everywhere both wild and cultivated With a little imagination you can ex try something new even In the containers and ac cessories you with your bou quet We have a friend who has a soup tureen which never had in it And yes we saw a cookie jar fill ed with dogwood in a in Newmarket The average person thinks that flower arranging is for ex perts only and Is something to dread and worry about As in any other art or craft you learn by practice starling with simple arrangements As you continue to practice and learn how to handle plant material you will be tempted to go on to more complicated designs There is such an enormous dif ference between an arrangement and a concoction of flowers pick ed and thrust into a vase that by studying arranging you can bring something entirely new to your family environment This can be a delightful hobby that will bring you many hours of joy and happiness It can bo a means of selfexpression that will afford you opportunity to forget the worries and cares of everyday lie You will find that much of the satisfaction of flower arranging is the added Interest you take in so many fields from carpentry and woodfinishing to sculpture and painting and not least of all horticulture Irene Librarian- MUSIC MEETS AT AURORA RESIDENCE The regular May way drifted to edu cation and we were intrigued by some of the differences we found in education as it is found in Nova Scotia in the States and in Ontario One thing which struck mo particularly was tho view which by the way I think Ive aired in this column before that French should be taught in the early grades Children learn by imitating and find no trouble with accent where older tongues are more stubborn Just think how humiliating it would be if you were travelling in some parts of Quebec Nova Scotia New Brunswick or the west with an empty stomach and no French Mrs Ion said that in Nova they taught it beginning about the sixth grade I think but we all agreed it should bo even earlier At the Women press club on St we were welcom ed by our hostess and introduced to some of the members who were scattered about the living room I was speaking to Edna Jacques by the way and then we adjourned to the dining room and were seated at a table which held six My right hand neighbor proved to addition to her hospi tal work she visited tho schools where there was among the pupils a great deal of malnutri tion and where cleanliness was not next to godliness There were discussions of nil sorts and then luncheon finish ed a screen was set up and two most interesting sets of pictures were shown by Mr and Mrs James Wyatt who had just re lumed from the north The first set was of the old time black and white showing the trials of the pioneer travellers The set was in color and showed the north in all the wild beauty of its lakes and rivers its moun tains and canyons The contrast between then and now was spec tacular and certainly effective As we bade Mrs Corps good bye we felt we had had de lightful experience and come in contact with some interesting people We even considered joining Leaving there we went to Friends House where Dorothy collected some mail and where we were shown over the wonder- old house once the residence of a bishop where now the So ciety of Friends carries on its activities I would like to have brought the wonderful old oak panelled library home with me and the fireplaces Im afraid my observance of the tenth com mandment was at a low ebb just then Mrs Smith who with her husband is in charge of the house was preparing a large evening meal for a number of young people who gather there on Tuesday evening to work and play and then enjoy a meal to gether We saw where the Friends meet on Sundays and the rooms for the care of the children dur ing the meeting Then we came to and stopped at the home of the Doctors Abbott where two of Dorothys children were visiting Over a cup of coffee Dr Viv ien Abbott told us a little about their experience in India She and her husband found she told us that it is the Christianity which is doing something for the people that is effective The doctors care and cures the nurs ing and the agricultural mission aries are successful because they are bringing hope and light into the darkness in a practical way which makes the people more ready to listen to the Gospel when it is brought to them They are told this work is the fruit of the Gospel Leaving there it was home for us Trousseau On the
