James Gibney TOO SENSITIVE Let a British author come to Canada and raise a shaggy eye brow let an American statesman like Senator arrive and utter some childlike notions about the union of Canada and the United Stales or let his wife reflect unfavorably upon the cos tume of Canadian women and then this nation quietly explodes says Bruce Hutchison in The Fin ancial Post We have many virtues hardly suspected by the and other casual tourists But our national sense of humor like our more visible resources is sadly underdeveloped Whether we are importing too much outside financial capital dont know Certainly we can safely import an increasing vol ume of new ideas that cost noth ing that may not be sound and may indeed be outrageous but will add some needed flavor to life Take A Ldofc Ball m m Maybe You Havent Got A Future The Newmarket Era and Express Thursday ftlay Page 5 You as a driver may be glad to know that while the total number of accidents in York county has increased your chances of meeting a sudden death have deceased slightly on a ratio of number of accidents to miles driven In in York county there were accidents reports the motor ve hicles branch of the department of highways One hundred and seventytwo persons were killed and were injured You may be the next Do you want to know how you will die The chances are four out of that you will die from a frac tured skull out of that it will be internal injuries and one out of that your spine will be fractured Your chances of burning to death are fairly low however That and a few oddments drowning asphyxia tion concussion and shock will carry you off The chances better than four out of six that you will hit another car and an innocent per son will die If you want to throw away your life why not pick a and leave the other guy out of it Accidents you say But these arent just a matter of mathema tics ratios and kismet In more than half of the cases you will be driving too fast for road or traffic conditions you wont have the right of way or youll be on the wrong side of the road Dont rely on caution when conditions are bad because in percent of the cases the roads will be dry and probably get it on a straight road one that is paved and in good con dition The odds favor Satur days between the hours of four and eight in the afternoon Sep tember and October and especi ally favorable months In four out of six cases the weather will be clear The statistics show that your accident is most likely to hap pen in the family car and the car will be in apparent good condition but defective brakes or blowouts will get a few of you If by chance you should survive you will be arrested or summonsed and there is no gamble on this You drivers under are going to cause a disproportionate num ber of accidents You are only percent of the drivers licensed but you will cause percent of PURCHASES PAGES OF GIFTS FOB ALL THE FAMILY i si I- JL as Do The n Bonus YOU V L J3 Our Bo ins Mi DCTAAS Of THE i I wont drive when you have been drinking and youre extra cautious when you are tired but this wont matter much because in out of cases you will be in a normal condition The figures wont be much help in ending the argument be tween male and female as to who is the better driver since you will be involved in almost equal proportions Railroad crossings are going to be the scene of quite a few spectacular smashes because you apparently cant look alter your self If you pick a crossing its three to one that it will be an unguarded crossing Its really too bad that there isnt some way of ensuring that only the driver gets it but every driver is going to take one pas senger and one pedestrian with him Half the pedestrians will be hit on the highway per cent will be under or over A lot of miles can be travelled in safety million miles for every seven or eight fatalities Odds like this might encourage you to take the occasional chance but just remember youre dicing with death and you cant win You wouldnt bet your money in a game like this so why risk your life 250 Destroyed In Brooder On the farm of Reeve Hodgson last Monday a flash fire in the brooder house destroyed fourday old chicks the brooder and a quan tity of feed A hole in the floor was burned It is believed a short circuit in the brooder heat lamps caused the shaving bed to take fire Mrs Hodgson first noticed smoke and telephoned for the Aurora fire department as the building was close to the farm buildings and there was a very high wind With aid from Sky- Line Farms Mrs Hodgson and son Bob extinguished the blaze with buckets of water from the nearby pump house without the help of the fire department Reeve Hodgson was away from home at the time Physical Education Is Theme Of Program Physical education
