J Excellent timing the hockey season ended Saturday at chimes and the first ball meet was Sunday Were glad to see the end of the shinny war fare These days the ice lane manoeuvres start in November and wind up in midApril A bit too long methmks We feel flattered about last weeks typewriter stint It seem ed to get the desired results The teams did endeavor to play hockey Saturday something they failed to produce in the in itial two games of the series They were and I feel 90 per cent of the viewers concurred anything but hockey classics In fact it was too bad Jack and his White Hope tournament operators werent around to sign a few hopefuls Saturdays contrast was remark able Hardly a stick was raised in anger and there were only 10 penalties The idea today seems to be in general to keep up with the Jones of do them one better I dont subscribe fully to the idea personally however we had this questionable honor thrust on us Friday this paragrapher to my knowledge is the first and only pressman to be refused permis sion to enter the Newmarket arena sinbin Youll pardon us if we stop to have a chuckle af ter that one And Spares Walt Born Edith Griffin Dorothy Bert 532 Father McCarnan Greta Lee Dorothy conduct in our own column we see it What we write In our column is our own personal opinion We Down the by Ab Hiilse anyone how to run his business and we dont want anyone to tell us how were going to write or what were going to write Thats our business You would think after all these years anyone should know on that score one cant influence this paragrapher We call them as we see them without fear or favor Our comments may not always please but I can assure one and all they are honestly given That is the only way our newspaper works In fact it is the only way a newspaper or a sport column can operate and be to its readers We have worked under three or four editors these years including the present community minded chief Jack The four have had one thing in common and that was they sent us out with one commission Get the facts then write it as you saw it On the other hand everyone is entitled to his or her opinion and if anyone is in opposition to our own the Era and Express is only too willing to open its col umns to our readers to express truck loading level an extra ONOMY1 a put you our forefathers fought for free dom- of speech and got it That is the way it should be Rings mentor Peter Gorman phoned Friday requesting lis not to go into the penalty box Hed made other arrangements and as he was renting the ice and the penalty box was part of the ice surface hed rather didnt trespass on that hallowed ground for sinners You know its getting harder all the time to hold onto these nonpaying jobs For years more or less weve been hand ling the penalty time and the clock It was not because we had to do it but mainly as our contribution to help the hockey teams Previous to Saturday we handled it for most of the Smoke Ring games tree gratis mind you as did our young and effi cient friend Donald who was also advised he could nt the sinbin One year we almost lost our amateur penalty timers stand ing It must have been eight or nine years ago that the then arena manager sug gested to the town league offi cials that the timerstatistician be paid the handsome fee of 1 per game We told them we didnt want it although most other arenas do pay the timer however they insisted Came the end of the season and the league just made ends meet and the timers stipend was for gotten Just think with nil this dough plus interest we could retire today If anyone takes offense at any of our remarks when none is intended this can not help It We saw the game that way and thats the way we reported it We gave an accur ate report of the game in our writeup but reserve the right comment on the game end its team are shooins for the Office Spe cialty Office Ladies champion ship with points followed by Lois Gibson Glenn Lois Gibsons featured the certain citizens of the community All we asked and we did so because we felt the citizens were en titled to get the facts on why the equipment was sold to Ger- for 160 without first asking if there was anyone in town who wanted to purchase it Regardless of opinion on the matter it was only sound busi ness practice and in the best in terest of hockey in this town to do this Already some busi nessmen have indicated they would not feel inclined under the circumstances to donate further funds for hockey equip ment in this community You ran readily see who will in the long run suffer from their thoughts on the matter The let ter from proved my point that our own lads could have made use of this equip ment The thing that amazes us out of the seven members of the Commission so far as we are aware not one has indicated he has pressed to have a state ment published on the matter Cheers Depart This weeks spotlight has to be on the Smoke Rings who Saturday brought Newmarket its first O A Highlands Golf club came as a surprise to most on Friday last To others the venture wasnt unexpected as Allan Abernethey Toronto bro ker who recently purchased the Dowser property to the immedi ate south protected his interests and the country atmosphere with the purchase forestalling pos sible subdivision You cant blame Pop Keith and Doug for getting their price and at the same time practically assuring a continuity of resi dential characteristics Golf courses as close as High lands is to the town have gone to oblivion in Metro as the realtors moved in The buildup of the Aurora club to its present popularity is a real tribute to the vision and industry of Pop and sons Keith and Doug- The course is one of the best in Ontario This trio will look af ter the club this year and the actual transfer will take place in December Vic back from the hockey wars at Fort Worth is on the job now and Otto the culinary king is back on the job so things will be as normal pro tern Af ter that we
