tftf jss5 L rf The Newmarket Art club held Its 24th annual exhibition of paintings in the town hali over he weekend The show opened on Friday evening and continued to Sunday Aprils Poor weather reduced Satur days attendance to the vanish ing point but on Sunday a continual stream of art enthusiasts from Newmarket and district visited the show Visitors were present also from Oshawa Sutton Stouffville and The exhibition was smaller than it has been for a number of years with less variety but standard Of previous shows was maintained Several new- comers to the club exhibited for the first time The work of nine local artists made up the display of oils and water colors which included seascapes portraits still life and landscapes Veteran painters Robert Chad- wick and William Parsons car ried the show as the established artists of the club Each exhibit ed several panels of paintings- Mr Parsons portraits of his son Ronnie and Robert Chadwick Jr rexcaled a sureness of style in this type of work Dike Mill a large winter scene and Late Evening In which Mr Parsons skillfully captured the last glow ing rays of the sun were among the many oils In his display which attracted attention Mr- Chadwick maintained his reputation as an accomplished landscapepainter with his en tries in the show A few suggested an influence from the Group of Seven but majority were in his own strong stylo Among these was Snake Fence a winter scene In which Mr knowledgeable use of color was most successful A greater ease and mastery of their media was seen in the work of other club members compar atively new in this field of ex pression but no longer in the novice class In the short space of two years Ruby has gone from a single entry to an entire panel of her own work Two with the evergreens heavily lad en with snow and a fail scene of a grain field were evidences of of this development A local artist whose work showed great advancement over last years show was Dorothy Parsons was a sureness of stroke and skillful handling of colors which resulted in the at mosphere of a scene being cap tured in her landscapes and gave quiet charm to a still life a grouping of ivy in a vase a china bird and draped fabric Shadows on the snow were reproduced effectively in The Gateway There was a fragile delicacy to the oils of Jeanne Gould The leaves in The Old Farm had the lacy illusion of early spring This was Mrs Goulds second year to exhibit as it was for J His technique particular ly in the landscapes reflected the influence of a British school of painting Mr pictures were of
