Cancer so ciety being held at the home of Mrs H Beer Pickering Col lege on Tuesday April at tention is being focused on the work of the Cancer society The society organized years ago was formed primarily to supply education for the general public so that early treatment of the disease might save lives Each year this educational pro gram has been extended and a successful campaign in will mean its continued expansion The society in Ontario has ta ken on the additional task of raising funds for research pur poses Information centres or as they have become known to thousands of Canadians Little Red Doors have been establish ed where a nurse or social work er is always in attendance to help those in need of assistance Another service of the Canadian Cancer society is the provision of qualified speakers for service and organizations Canadian Cancer society is a national organization of volun teer workers There are groups in each of the 10 provinces with the Ontario division having more than units The op- crates under the title of Aurora and District The services which resulted from the Canadian Medical asso ciations recommendation that an organization of lay people be formed to assist in the fight against cancer have expanded beyond the founders expecta tions The society now provides films for meetings It arranges radio talks publishes reports and articles on cancer in periodicals and distributes literature by mail and by hand at fall fairs exhibitions and meetings Cancer dressings are supplied by the society free of charge in Ontario on the ad vice of a doctor or nurse These dressings are required in large numbers and can become an ex pensive burden to advanced can cer patients Suitable used materials for cancer dressings are collected in Newmarket Donations can be left at the Womens Institute Room St The lo cal group meets regularly to make dressings from the donated materials More workers are welcomed and each work session is announced in the Era and Ex press Among the other services of the Canadian Cancer society is the provision of transportation for patients requiring treatment Many units have set up loan cupboards for the convenience of cancer patients Other groups provide extra patient comforts for those confined to hospital or invalided at home Every year the society finds new ways of extending its help ing hand to cancer sufferers and to families where one of the par ents has cancer These vital ser vices will continue because of the support that the general pub lic gives to the annual appeal for funds and because volunteer workers are
