tion distributed books in in districts where ho other library service was available The substantial number of books circulated reflects not only the importance of the ser vice rendered but the need for it Upwards of more books were distributed through this service than during the pre vious year Books are not sent out to in dividuals but to responsible groups such as rural school boards farm forums Womens Institutes church associations study clubs and reading groups The books are carefully selected to suit a variety of needs and tastes A list of the books wanted should accompany the request but when it is missing the library staff endeavors to make a selection based on years of in serving rural readers The service is free for the most part The only cost involve is payment of transportation charges one way on book ship ments Each shipment contains from to books Like public libraries the tra velling libraries branch does not issue catalogues for the bor rowers use But it has been able to supply about 90 percent of the books requested Sometimes a representative of a group come to the Libraries headquarters at Huron St Toronto to pick out the books There they find them arranged under such headings as family life and adventure in far places people who do tilings hobbies and recreations religion and science and books for boys and girls The number of volumes han dled by the libraries is kept around the level Care is taken to preserve the books and to keep them as fresh and new- looking as possible Primarily the libraries func tion is to educate Books and there are approximately new volumes annually must he selected carefully with that thought in mind But they must be interesting and enter taining too A great deal of work Is involved in the selection of the rural Ontario At the pres ent time some volumes are circulated under authority of the Department of Education for the use of teachers This is an im portant work for the books are catalogued and embrace a large of subjects To name a few there are hooks on art music auxiliary education child growth and development mathe matics school management and social studies These books are loaned to the individual teacher on a three- week basis and there is no ex pense to the applicant The are mailed out in Jiffy bags with postage both ways paid by the government through the Board of Education Two
