Communications lle Newmarket Bra and Express Thursday Communications in the telephone business means basic ally local and long distance service with all the modern re finements On Tuesday evening Bell Telephone representative described some of the other communications provided by the Bell teletype mobile telephone ser vice transmission the carrying of radio programs by wire and the latest the car rying of television network pro- E Bell Telephone representative who spoke area is increasing and the needs day evening on Your Telephone of the church are growing I Company and Television to the Newmarket Optimist club mem- Classified ads bring results at a regular dinner meeting- grams Mr addressed New market Optimist club at the King George hotel and the sub ject of his talk was Your Tele phone Company and Television Whenever speak Mr explained your voice vibrates in the air to act upon the eardrums of those listening to you The mechanism in a telephone mouthpiece trans forms these vibrations into elec trical impulses which vary with the different sounds and tones speech These electri cal impulses travel along wires to the receiver at the other end where they are translated back speech vibrations which your ear can hear and your brain can understand Just as we carry speech so we can carry photographs print ed messages and television pic tures he said You see all of them can be transformed into electrical impulses Its Just a logical development of the tele phone business television however an other factor enters the story he said Television is loo com plicated to carry over ordinary telephone lines The Bells microwave radio relay equip ment which was developed to carry long distance conversa tions was therefore designed to carry television Our experi ence shows that the joint use of a radio relay system for tele phone and television is advan tageous for all concerned Television impulses differ from sound impulses though they follow the same principle Mr pointed out In a German scientist named Paul being a medical doctor well turned his knowledge in both fields to the problem of transmitting a picture Knowing the peculi arities of the human eye reasoned that if you took a picture and shone a light on it in small units or spots and translated those spots of light into electrical impulses you would have the way to a solu tion This German doctor invented the disc with a series of small holes through which a light from a picture could be translated in spots to a photo electric cell The picture was transformed by the cell into electric impulses and an appar atus was invented to reassemble the impulses at the receiving end fast enough so that you could not see the change from one spot to another Thus the accumulation spot lights from the original picture was translated into a composite pic- lure at the receiving end Mr assured his audi ence that even today with all our modern inventions and de velopments it is still this basic principle that Is used to give you the clear picture on your modern television receiver However lie said it was not until when the vacuum tube was developed and elec tronic tubes were brought into play and improved that the tele vision camera as we know it came into being It picks up more than spots of light as it scans or views an entire picture A model of the early disc and of the later develop ments from it were on display to illustrate what Mr Forster was saying Television and voice transmis sion via microwave was illus trated both by radio and tele phone using two miniature mk towers set up on the stage Microwaves Mr ex plained travel in straight tinea and that Is why microwave towers are mounted on hilltops in line of sight with each other As many as long distance conversations can be carried simultaneously through the Bells microwave facilities which also carry television pro grams between Montreal and Toronto and link with United States television network programs from Buffalo WINTER A
