will not be a member of the council Many people are prone to praise a man while fie holds office but soon forget him when he is out of From time to time we differed Mr King and he differed with us But that fact never at any time made any difference to personal relations which were always friendly Even wheri we differed with him we praised his ability Dale King is above that petty type of mind which takes offence at people who dont agree with him In the early part of his first year of office King felt his way and did not himself overmuch But during the lat ter part of and through the year he took an increasing ly active part hi all phases of council work He showed in creasing ability for municipal work and for that reason we very greatly regretted that he- did not carry However that is a story that has been told He worked very hard oh council matters during and will benefit from a rest We hope he will In due course seek a return to council for the experience he gained could be of great future use to iha citizens of Aurora Floodlights Report In all likelihood this will be the last time that we shall be mentioning Councillor P J Murray for if all goes well he will on January a forecasts ranging the weather to world problems concerned with peace or war We have been- reading some predictions concerning the latter and while appears to be the general view that some state of international tension will general conclusions are that iip global war will in One of reasons for such a comforting conclusion arrived at by competent judges is the pre- paredness of the free nations pf the world for possible trouble the past war has resulted from such lack of redness on the part of the countries That this basic weakness has been replaced by an armed strength capable an aggressor must bo put to the credit of farseeing statesmen on both sides of the Atlantic Most readers will recall that the ye noted as the critical periods by earlier prognbsticators The reason for their fears was based on the assump tion that the free peoples of the world would lack the general will to pull together for their own collective defence That such fears are now dismissed by the presence of collective strength is an augury that will be welcomed by all peaceloving people the over who will ardently pray for its realization V DEFENCE OF GREAT CANADIAN 0 On more than one occasion we have expressed the opinion that Beverley Baxter is one of the few great writers alive today His mastery over English lang uage is not excelled by anyone known lip shows an instinctive for the right word- 11 is prose is easyflowing and musical It is obvious that he de lights in writing and for a good reason pleasure to the intelligent reader Mr Baxter has all the rare qualities of great essayists lie can bo whimsical- morons satirical find pungent It is not often that ho resorts to the biting phrase but- when employs it leaves a memory Usually he is benevolent his even to those whom ho finds good for disliking lie temiershis criticisms with kindly inter- jectiOUS Because such a t we find it hard to find reasons or attacks to which ho is sub jected in the Canadian journal to which ha contributes his Some of these attacks are malevolent tone and irrational statement It seems to us that iatlW should be proud of Canadian a road arid bringing to ad brilliant portraits in words of I what is happening in the To attacks does Baxter ever i a reply That should refrain doing immensely to his is rather than irritated at such disploys nation Bui to who rightly honor a great Canadian because of his eminent talent such vulgar noises directed against him are more Thoie a lesson for lessor writers to bo drawn from Mr Baxters sustained aloofness from his brawling opponents The lesson is that lesser writer shall not be moved from his course by malevolent or opposition but continue as Kipling wrote to paint the thing as ho sees it following comprise the members of council committees ARE SAYING Is Bought By A The holiday season is over That was mourn- fully obvious on Monday morning when on our way to the office wo saw numerous shrubs lying around for the c attention of the garbage collectors The shrubs that were now had but lately glittered as Christmas trees in happy homes was something rather January issue of Macleans sad we thought at the sight of these dismantled mementos which had brought joy on their arrival and had now been hus tled out as waste to be carted away and forgotten It is easy to recall the smiles and loving attention the shrubs received af ter they had come indoors and while the festivities continued The Christmas cards too have gone and remain only a pleasant memory So too the street dec orations and the garlanded stores which did so much credit to their owners Auroras Main street was beautifully adorned for the Christmas season and for this Mr Charles Copland hydro manager deserves a special word of commendation Orderly Celebrations From what we have heo Aurora has had a very happy holiday season and certainly a wonderfully orderly one Police Chief Dunham was rejoicing oyer the fact that there had been no trouble In three days over the holidays he told us we had no calls There was drunk but ho cooled off af ter minutes pause which the boys gave him and then he went oh his way It was apparent the pause that refreshes Getting Hack To Normal The trouble with holidays Is that they create a break in tine which takes little tithe to repair takes only however to get back- to usual activities During the holidays we were able to catch up on some reading Two articles we rend in greatly interested us The first was a remarkably intimate writeup of Mr Roy the owner of more than newspapers the majority of them being Canadian Ho has just recently acquired a very famous Scottish newspaper The Scotsman The Scotsman is one of the oldest newspapers in the world having originated in the year an interesting historical fact which the writer of the Maclean article somehow over looked It is published in Edin burgh and is especially concern ed with subjects of Scottish in terest How Mr Thomson will bo able to accommodate himself to control of such a national newspaper will provide in teresting study since the article states that ho is leaving ht3 na tive Canada to begin a hew life in Edinburgh and personally direct his new newspaper inter est V Wayne and Tolling their story Wayne and It very apparent that preparing a half hours radio program once is a tough job A humorous gag may re quire hours of hard work after
