THEY ARE SAYING j Nisbet Refuses Recount The election figures proved that we were far from being alone in our belief that Aurora was in need of a new mayor voters upheld that belief although 273 of them selected another candidate rather than the one we Supported Nonetheless the mayor was reelected on a minority of the total votes cast for a holder of his office The most strenuous efforts the school board after four years were made to keep the retiring mayor in office Besides having as we understood a committee- in a real estate of fice included among other sup porting efforts were letters sent out by a number of business men service He was edged out by three votes losing to John Original report gave two votes Mr Keith is a sports man It was suggested to him that he should request a recount He declined for two reasons He t said he admired the work which that he had not enough brains of his own to make up his own mind as to whom he should vote for or that he needed guidance on the matter Since the letter was typed and is not marked as being private and sube but not until we received the undermentioned h ffirf we read an idyll on smells suggestion that it be published J Farm let- expense in connection with a recount of votes Keith de serves a warm hand for his sportsmanship Poem On Odors We have read rhymes and poetic outbursts on many and The letter is signed by one of and appropriately the principal partners in toe re- centlyformed Aurora Banner as follows company but to save caption BREAKING THE SMELL man any possible embarrass ment we are withholding his name signed with ink We think however that it does pro vide good proof of the strenu ous efforts we have referred to as a means of keeping the pres ent mayor in office The Letter The letter dated Aurora On tario November reads as writing to you this way because J happen to believe that like myself you are deeply concerned with the future of Aurora This in spite of what some people from outside say is a pretty good town and one that is going places but it has to have good leadership to do so If we put people who are inexperienced at the head of its affairs especially under pres ent conditions we are likely to find ourselves in an awful mess Likewise if we put in people who have already shown their inability to handle things pro perly we could find ourselves in an equally bad situation For this reason Im voting for Dr Crawford Hose for Mayor when municipal elections are held next Monday If you see fit to go along with me and BARRIER As one motors south on Yonge to Aurora A snug little town they say You pass a creek that assails your beak With a miasma not new mown hay It rises like a wall of odor If rolling at fifty you reduce to thirty As the road sign points out quick So if youre allergic to bad odors Then take a tip from me Just detour a block and avoid the shock And leave that Aurora smell on the lea Out And Around The editor of the Banner like the Old Man of the Sea has come out from his cave now that the tide is running high Mayor Rose is back in the Ban ner picture and all But until the results were made known the Banner editor kept to his editorial cave apparently REGRETS The candidate we supported for mayor was de feated We have no regrets excuses or apologies to make In the same set of circumstances we would make the same choice We were not born of the stuff that turns tail at the sight of defeat We back our opinions to the end and are glad to go down fighting In all the circumstances surrounding the mayoral fight Mr Alex Bell did well Had Mr Dale King kept out of it as it was his expressed intention so to do until almost the last minute Mr Bell would have been mayor of Aurora for But if the story is true Jlr King came in to qualify at almost closing lime because of a telephone call which he resented The caller requested him not to run It was a pity that he acted so because he was irked as the story goes He is a man of ability whose work on council had greatly improved during the present year Had he remained another year or two on council there is little doubt that his ambition would have been realized But he didnt so decide and in the end queered the pitch for a man whom he took down to defeat with him We have never professed that Mr Alex Bell was either as boisterous or as loudly vocal as his successful opponent Nor has he the colorful qualifications that could make him as good a showwindow as the man who came out on top on a minority vote But he lias other qualifications that are better if not so blatant lie is a kindlydisposed man who uuler no con ceivable circumstances would insult either his council or any one of the citizens He has no loud airs but he did show a to do all he could to remedy grievances brought to his notice by taxpayers He was defeated but not disgraced Far from regretting the assistance we gave him we take pleasure at the thought of having done so SUBDIVIDERS MUST PAY At the last meeting of council a very important bylaw received a third reading It is called the Sub division Control ByLaw If we understand its pur pose correctly future policy governing subdivisions in the municipality of Aurora is changed completely Whether the change will prove beneficial for the pro gress of the municipality is extremely debatable Ex perience will decide that It would appear Ijmt from now on subdivides will have to pay the total costs of all services required for subdivision development Roads streets a water services sanitary sewers and storm sewers if the engineer rules that storm sowers arc necessary will to be installed by the On the face of it the new bylaw is hardly calculated to give an impetus to land development in the municipality CLOSED MEETINGS Quito a number of closed meetings have been held during the present year Some of them dealt with the bringing of the county seat to Aurora engineered by socalled big shots whose work behind closed doors brought neither credit nor results to this town We hope these gatherings of the soothsayers will die with the old year The taxpayers have a right to know what is being done with their lime and money By law neither the press nor the public can be excluded from ordinary or general meetings of council The only condition govern ing their presence is that they must neither talk nor stamp their feet In the more cultured language of Kennedy St W they must keep their traps closed DUAL PERSONALITIES Readers of Robert lmis Stevenson if there are any left in this atomic and comicstrip age will doubtless recall his story of Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde It is a masterpiece of its kind it displays two typos of men in one single personality The one was good and the other bad How two exactly opposite characters can be found in a single personality is a puzzle beyond powers of psychology or psychiatry to explain In the course of our life we have had the unpleasant experience of discovering one or two instances of dual personality Such a discovery comes as a shock You meet a man whoso manners arc charming and his vcrsatlon delightful Something occurs which he dis likes and the other side of him suddenly erupts His speech becomes abusive and his eyes glitter with lence You have met a dual personality It may be that the charming manners and pleasant speech are no more than a pose a means to end Some of the greatest scoundrels in history possessed both while a rough tongue it has been claimed often conceals a kind and honest heart The majority of mankind however will prefer good a nice address and continue to take a chance on comes after them COUNCIL REPORT A Majority Vote Council That Pay The chief subject of discussion at the meeting of the town council held on Tuesday night December Jones said it was good business to help building in town Pros and Cons Reeve Cook said he would support the bylav but there were many angles Council had to be the judge on every piece of property and this was finally re ferred to the fire and finance committee for a review of the whole fire department setup Applications were also receiv ed from the police for salary in creases and these were directions as compared with the record figures established in the elections held in December Outstanding in this reduced support is cose of Mayor Rose who two years ago polled votes as compared with given for him on Monday Dec By coincidence the total of votes were cast for Mayor Bell in December For the rceveship Mr A A Cook obtained votes in De cember 1951 compared with the total of 050 obtained by him this year representing a decline in his case of votes In Mr Patrick polled votes as compared with 192 votes secured by him this year Without council experience and making his first bid for of fice Mr Floyd Corner did re markably well in obtaining votes originally stated With three candidates in field the total number of votes cast for mayor In December 1953 amounted to com pared with votes cast for two candidates only in Decem ber For the with two candidates running In total number of votes cast was as compared with votes cast for candidates in representing total drop of votes Votes for Councilor In Mr Cliff Corbett scored an allhigh poll of votes with Mr Victor Jones closely behind him with votes This year Mr Corbett polled 864 votes and Mr Jones In third position this year Mr C Davis polled votes as compared with his total votes in December Remarkable testimony was paid to two oneyear members of council Jean Moffat and Mr William both of whom this strongly supported throughout their year of office in In Mrs Moffat polled only votes as compared with cost for her this year She lost out to Mr Davis by vote only for third place Fifth position was taken by Mr William Davidson with the handsome total of votes a testimony to a hardheaded and often hardhitting councillor Sixth final council can didate was won by Mr with votes his first try We wish him oil
