A LOUAW QUALITY We were thinking about the nomination meeting and the coming elections as we took down a book loaned to us by Mr Robert Martin It has given us much pleasure before but like most books of its kind we find it most difficult to put away The book Scottish Life and Characters told in anec dote and story was published 50 years ago but the humorous tales could apply to our present- day affairs Returning to the nomination meeting we thought that some of the choice of texts were not always the happiest but sometimes led to a laugh as in the following story One Sabbath a minister of very short stature was asked by a brother preacher to fill his pulpit for the day It happened that the pulpit Was a very high one and nearly hid the little minister from view However the congregation managed to I keep their countenances until a nose and two eyes suddenly ap peared over the top of the pul pit and a squeaking tremulous voice proclaimed in nasal tones the text Beof good cheer it of Alrs EIna is I be not afraid A general roar of laughter followed Some of the speakers at nom- and Mrs E J ination meeting who avowed were weekend their innocence of an Jiests of Mr and Mrs A brought
