eWOTOO A ll j J fc TO ST AST Dear Editor To be or not to be that is the question dog control that is At the moment the picture is very confusing to most citizens A few weeks ago notices appeared in your paper concerning the collections of dog licenses and another saying that the bylaw concerning dog con trol the year round would be strictly enforced After many people received summonses and were fined for not keeping their dogs under control a member of council stated that it was not the inten tion of council to be too hard paw and either strictly enforce on people since the dogs really but he sent one of the members of the force to see me and after checking with many neighbors was able to prove that the dogs were definitely not owners dogs With my cooperation we were finally able to round them up and the police destroyed them Surely neither a citizen nor the police department should have to be placed in a position like that because of the laxity of council I hope the new council will consider the dog control The Newmarket Business and ftofesaonal Womens club has packed its overseas Christmas boxes for its sister club in Ket tering England The group met at the home of Mrs Bevans- on Wednesday Nov to pack the parcels There was sufficient to send two large boxes A smaller one will be sent to the Kettering and P club later 7 L l I i NORTH GWILLIMBURY wish to express my appreciation of the confidence you placed in me at the polls last year and on the basis of my record of achievement as your reeve I feel justi fied in asking for your continued support in the forth coming election which has been forced on the taxpayers former public servants for reasons best known to themselves I appeal to your good judgment in asking for your continued support as your reeve for the year J POLLOCK Reeve North Township did not do much harm at this time of year except to upset a few garbage cans If my dog should get out and a policeman appears at my with a sum mons may I quote Mr and thus not pay a fine Also what is the policeman supposed to say since it is his duty to see that the laws are obeyed Just why the town council suddenly decided to enforce this bylaw after allowing conditions to exist which we had in our neighborhood all summer is beyond me About the first of June someone left three dogs to roam and starve in this vicinity At first they stayed under cover in the daytime and came out at night to forage for food They were so hungry that they ran up and down all barking and no one was able to sleep Finally some of us who could not watch the suffering of these poor animals started to feed them and we managed to get some rest at night Incidentally we probably kept some child from being bitten by these animals which had not only been hungry but chased and beaten by some people We even attempted to catch them so that they could either be hu manely destroyed or perhaps homes might have been found for them However they did not trust humans and could you blame them I Dr C Gaitskell director of art depart ment of education be the guest speaker at the general meeting of Home and School council on Thursday Dec The meeting will be held in the Charles Howitt school which is about lit or go back to the old of a mile west of Stop 21 where they were confined St for the summer months No members of Home and dog lover can object to the sum- School associations within York- control law because area are invited to at- can be considerate of the man who loves his garden just as they love their dog The winter one will be too hard to enforce and would take a full time policeman riding around town constantly to make it work Of course fining a few people to scare the others is good psy chology but will probably hit the ones who take care of their pets rather than those who let ihem wander and who would not claim them if they were picked up In the meantime I am rather tired of taking my out for exercise several times and passing many dogs running around while the only control they have is their owners sitting at home in cosy surroundings while I am out in all kinds of weather As to dogs upsetting garbage which originally caused the by law to be passed why wouldnt it be much easier both for the dog owners and the taxpayers to enforce another bylaw which has never been used There is a bylaw which states that all garbage must be put in metal covered containers How can you expect even a well fed dog not to investigate the paper parcels and uncover- tend this Christmas meeting which will feature appropriate music in the program The gen eral public will be welcomed WILLOW BEACH Miss Joan Chapman spent the weekend with Miss Jacqueline Thayer On Wednesday Nov Mr and Mrs John McNeill cele brated their wedding anni versary Owing to this was rerrted to mem- 1 pie I saw two children who MUNICIPAL ELECTION mm a of two yean years for of Newauirfcet will be held la the of council and to the police department several times by many people and the answer al ways was the same Although the Humane Society ceased op erating about the first of June and the council knew they had to have a pound they did noth ing about it The police depart ment had their hands tied by the regulation that a dog could not be destroyed immediately and since they had no way of keeping these animals they could do nothing The councils answer to the dog pound question was that they thought the chief of police was taking care of the matter Surely they knew that he could neither build a pound or acquire one without a motion of council making the money available any more than he could go out and buy a new car A slang expres sion for that kind of thinking might be passing the buck After reading in the paper that dog owners were being fin ed and the dogs I have been referring to were still roaming I called Mr and asked why this was being allowed since by this time due to ex posure all the dogs had con tracted distemper and their suf fering was pitiful There was the matter of the pound again were well dressed and apparent ly well fed retrieving chicken bones from one of these paper parcels which had broken open after being rain soaked If children would do that what do you expect of supposedly dumb animals In conclusion I the dog haters and there are a few who will say that the whole problem could be solved for council the police department and the citizens by all of us dis posing of our dogs but it just so happens that many of us still feel that dog is mans best friend Yours truly Elizabeth K Mrs Friends and neighbors extend LEGION NEWS The Editor The periodical outbreak of disease In Ameri can politics is not new and look ing at it in a detached manner it is just a manifestation that our neighbors to the south like their public life to be exciting and noisy Their present attempt at en larging the stage for the big show is possibly in line with the recent development in wide screen movie presentation This is all good and well and even if it isnt we should keep out of it It isnt our show Therefore it is disturbing to find that the Ca nadian Broadcasting Corporation a government corporation sup ported and supplied with the tax payers money found it necessary to provide free time for the dis cussion going on in the recent controversy Only a lack of judgment and a lack of perspective could have prompted the CBC to state that this broadcast was of national interest to lis It wasnt and while admittedly some people might have been interested in the remarks made by McCarthy they could have listened to him on the many American stations well within our range It is to be regretted that if the has time available for the discussion of matters of public interest it cannot be given to Canadian problems of undoubt edly greater importance Afford- free time the CBC compro mised this country without giv ing a service which was not otherwise available Reader Members are asked to remem ber the general meeting next
