THEY AR SAYING Record Be Assessor Needs Lot Depths Last year Aurora gained a first perhaps in all of Canada for a wellbehaved Halloween Chief Dun ham paid tribute to the younger generation for their splendid behavior and to his staff and school authori ties for the great assistance given in achieving the won derful record of the quietest Halloween on record V Many people are asking if that model Halloween can be re peated this year Besides the excellent work of the school authorities great credit was due to Constabft William for the talks he gave to the pu pils He made an appeal to them to keep the peace to enjoy themselves but to have a regard for property and the comfort of the citizens Constable is an effi cient and popular officer When it is necessary he pulls no punch es but he is conciliatory in man ner has the gift of removing possible trouble without much fuss It is hoped that this year he repeat his talks to pupils at the schools Aurora cannot afford to slip from the marvel lous record it set up last year Aurora has a wonderful record as a peaceful lawabiding town But we should never forget services rendered by the police force is societys protector Without the police force society could easily sink into chaos in stead of enjoying security and order Ready Cooperation We were glad to hear from Mr Douglas Arnold assistant asses sor to Mr Gordon that he is experiencing ready coopera tion generally from the property owners in Aurora You have a very fine town said Mr Arnolds and with few exceptions every one is doing his and her best to help us get on with the job of assessing vz have to carry out One point he raised should be brought to the attention of pro perty owners This concerns the depth of their lots Mr Arnold pointed out that it was in the in terests of property owners to know the exact depth of their For example if the lot is 50 by then the depth is feet He told an amusing story of a man who asked him if the depth meant below the surf ace You do meet with rare exceptions like that he said The depth of course is the length of the lot from front to back The assessor said it would be very helpful if property owners would have that information ready as it could save them money through having the correct measurements Mr Arnold is a man of pleasant and courteous approach and his efficiency at his work is obvious We would say that the only people who need to fear him are those if any who want to put something over Then we think he could become very It was learned at the meeting of the recreation commission last Thursday evening that Mr Cliff had a birthday that day All the members gave him a warm hand and no one ever bet ter deserved it Heres an extra hand from us Cliff- May your shadow never grow less Aurora Junior Choir Out at- under the auspices of the junior chamber of commerce the Aurora junior choir under the conductorship of Mr Ilityd Harris and accom panist Mrs Harris gave what was described as a brilliant song recital in the Wall Street United church on Oct In order to see how the choir was received the following para graph from a lengthy review is taken from daily newspaper The Recorder and Times quote The angelic tones of welltrained young voices softly vibrating through street United church here Friday night during a song recital by the Aurora Junior Choir will long be remembered by all who heard their splendid performance Un der the direction of Harris organist and choirmaster at the United church in Aurora the young voices blended harmoni ously in high perfection of tone enunciation and quality Among those who travelled with the choir to were Mrs Paul Mrs Mr J Buchanan and Mr Doug Fisher REPORT AND COMMENT Mrs Moffat Elected first President Of New Council Believed to be the first woman in Ontario to be elected to such a position Councillor Mrs Jean Moffat chosen president of the newlyformed Industrial Council at its initial meeting held on Friday Oct 16 It an honor well deserved in view of her valuable ser vices on council during The new organization is the outcome of proposals submitted to the town council by the board of trade and contained in a letter dated June 1953 The propos als were submitted to council by Mr president of the board of trade Problems which the Industrial Council ore expected to deal with include labor supply housing program industrial sites annex ation water supply and water pressure also sewerage The original proposal was for members to compose the new body but this number was fin ally reduced to six Considerable speculation exist ed with regard to the chairman ship of the Industrial Council The election of Mrs Moffat sets all such speculation at rest and there is little doubt that the choice of president will he popu lar in Aurora Councillor Moffat has proved herself to be a wom an of outspoken mind who is nev er diverted from her purpose by criticism Her nomination was proposed by Mr and seconded by Mr Doug and the vote was a unanimous one Down To Business Alter thanking the members to have a number of small industries located in Aurora ra ther than trying to induce any big industry to come to town Mrs Moffat said smaller industries gave a greater measure of econ omic security Mr Lees said he was greatly puzzled on the question of whether or not any land was available in Aurora for industries Mr Seston said there was Land but it would have to be bought at owners prices Gathering Facts Mr Doug said one of chief reasons for the exis tence of their organization was to gather facts on properties and lands ami of all facts connected with the future development of the mun ici pat M commented that the new assess ments being taken ought to make a tot of information available Mrs Moffat suggested that each member make individual studies of what they considered most ur gent and bring their recommen dations to the next meeting Mr thought it would be a good idea to contact other centres and out what was being done After considerable discussion Mr condensed their con clusions under three heads for their confidence in electing down individual thoughts on her to office and some words of what we are looking for welcome to the press Mrs Mof fat speedily got the meeting un derway It was a good meeting with numerous sensible and prac tical thoughts being expressed It was extremely interesting to hear the views of Mr Mr Lees Mr Doug on the numerous prob lems that confront the growth of Aurora especially in regard to sites and facilities for possible new industries The new president expressed the opinion that it would be on experience of other towns and procure brochures where possible and Moke contacts wherever passible with local people who have sugges tion to offer Other Business the office of secretary- treasurer Mr Doug Fisher in his absence at was nominated subject to his approv al It agreed to hold monthly meetings these to be held on the first Tuesday of each month rw r OFFICE HALL AURORA PA- 74573 PAGE NINE THURSDAY THE TWENTYSECOND DAY OF OCTOBER NINE TEEN HUNDRED AND FIFTYTHREE EDITORIALS WHO CHAIRMAN Arising out of the publicity concerned with free time for skating at the arena and the frequent mention of Dr Hendersons name in connection therewith it is understandable for some people to wonder if he is the chairman of the arena board To our best knowledge the chairman of the arena board is Sir who came to council in August to ask agreement on the spending of for arena repairs Readers will recall that one month later that sum was boosted to plus The talking that was done at council for the arena board was done by Sir Stoddart and there was no appearance of Dr Henderson But since the free time controversy began his name has been repeatedly mentioned Whether this has given the learned doctor any pleasure we cannot say Having regard to his apparent preference for closed meetings we doubt that it has given him pleasure but that is not the important point The important point is that up to the present the chairman of the arena board has expressed no public opinion on the issue of free ice time Dr Henderson has and that fact may account for confusion on the question of who is chairman of the arena board REPORT WITHHELD As our readers will see from the report of the pro at the recreation commission meeting held on Thursday night Oct only a passing reference was made to the special report presented by Mr Offord to the commissions previous meeting concerning the ser vices of the recreation director It was pointed out by Councillor J Murray that while Mr report was accepted it was not ap proved as no discussion took place on it Mr Stead- man reminded the chairman Mr J E Buchanan that the reason given for the curtailment of discussion was the lateness of the hour and the heavy agenda Coun cillor Vic Jones concurred with these views In our editorial of two weeks ago we maintained that the report having been read publicly should have been available to the press for closer study Mr Buchan an ruled against that in direct opposition to an earlier directive contained in the commissions records If it is intended to smother the report a condition of conjec ture will be created which will not enhance the com missions reputation NOTHING DONE So far nothing has been done in connection with the danger spots on Yonge St to which attention has been drawn The bad weather may soon be upon us and then it will be too late for action The council takes no responsibility for accidents to citizens except in instan ces of proven negligence But is it not a case of proven negligence on the part of council if it is made aware of danger spots and then neglects to take steps to remove them Such a danger spot exists at the Bank of Montreal where at least three citizens have fallen on the tricky pavement It was understood that this was to be cor rected but the matter has not so far been raised in council The appearance of things now is that the dangerous slope will as it is and citizens left to make the best of a bad job DONT QUOTE ME How often we hear the appeal Dont quote me Somebody comes along and voices an opinion that may have a great deal of substance in it and then ends by saying Dont quote mo No reputable person would quote somebody else unless they had permission to do so It is a rule of good manners to treat private conver sations as strictly private Certainly no reputable news paper would disregard such a rule The matter is different however when some question of public importance is under discussion and a partici pant making a good point discounts it by imploring that he be not quoted Fear is a crippling mental disease If everyone wore afraid to express an opinion and stand by it the world would soon be filled with morons A healthy opinion is a good thing To express it and not be ashamed to own it publicly is proof of integrity and straight shooting PIOUS HUMBUGS Pious humbugs are plentiful Usually their stock in trade is an ingratiating grin and an oily manner They take care never to offend by brusque speech except in circumstances it might appear to bring them an advantage Their opinions are conditioned to their hearers Like flies in search of human blood they buzz a bit to find out if their potential victim is awake or asleep The pious humbug is by nature a creeper His slick talk is in keeping with his slick methods He shrinks from opposition Ho likes to make his deals under cover Plausible and smooth in speech he has no scruples in attaining his objective He covets publicity for Us Someone has said that all men are my brothers Some one was fooled Better bo found dead beside a skunk than beside a humbug RECREATION COMMISSION Special Report On Services Of Director Not Discussed A long meeting of the recreation commission took place on Thursday night Oct when among other subjects the subject of free ice time was again to the fore It was recognized that town council had done its best to meet the situation Mr vicechair man of the commission and chair man of its finance committee presented a schedule of working hours for the director and his as sistant The arrangements made for average working hours for the director and his assistant rep resent approximately hours per week Mr said that in the past there had been no systemat ic schedule drawn up and said they must start somewhere He felt that the present schedule might have to be amended to meet changing circumstances In any case it had the approval of the arena board and he hoped the commission would now approve it- Councillor D J Murray ques tioned if the program could be approved Following considerable discussion the commission decid ed to approve the schedule in COLOR rf GARY COOPER THE STORY OF THE At COUNCIL REPORT Problem Of Tanks Plan For New Store Window Debated A major topic of discussion at a general meeting of the town council held on Monday night Oct 19 was a letter received by the mayor from the department of national defence in connection with the location and movement of tanks at the armories The department submitted a Mr ArdlU to get his window hut plan which would include the undertaking of work at the armories on the completion of which the letter appeared to request that responsibility for road repairs among other mat ters would pass to the town A long took place when the came up under un finished business Councillor Clarence Davis was understood to say that he did not think it fair that the government of Canada should expect tho town of Aurora to bear respon sibility in matters concerned and that 30 ton tanks ought not to bo locating on residential streets DeputyReeve Murray said he could sec no objection to tanks Later Councillor King moved and DeputyReeve Murray pro posed the acceptance of plan but an amendment moved by Councillor Murray and seconded by Councillor Moffat was carried four to three This mount that tho plan will be deferred for fur ther consideration The main purpose of tho amendment concerned movement of the tanks from armories into the country The amendment directed that tanks proceed north along St to Wellington St and then turn east The removal of a tree which allegedly hindered free movement was requested by DeputyReeve Murray and met with considerable opposition Window At At previous meeting of council held on Oct Mr J was granted permission to put in window on north wall of Ardill premises tho installation of which meant that the window would project proximately thrco feet over tho lino mayor said tho permit had not yet been granted and that they had acted In haste two weeks ago Councillor Davidson rose to say that ho had supported application but had misunder stood that tho solicitor suggested that an agreement be made with Mr to indemnify the town against accidents which might result from the window projecting over line Councillor Murray drew atten tion to existing bylaws which ruled that buildings must keep to the lino Objections ho said would be made by other store keepers Year Lease The town solicitor said should be a lease in regard to use of a portion of town land DeputyReeve Murray moved and Councillor King sec onded that a tenyear leaso bo granted Mr Ardill and this was opposed by Councillors Jones Davidson and Murray lease will be terminable on a
