things slip the memory of the deputyreeve To rejuvenate that oft- confessed failing memory we shall devote ourselves to the review of a few facts in answer to a charge he cently made against us He said dont think the present editor of the Aurora News Page has helped Aurora in any shape or form When we started writing in the Aurora Banner in the month of September we were advised that the citizens took very little interest in local municipal affairs The percentage of voters who went to the polls was among the lowest in all of the Ontario municipalities We applied ourselves to the problem of getting voters out and in November 1949 the former high school audi torium was crowded to capacity In that election more votes were cast than at any time in the history of Aurora People became interested in local questions for the reason that a local newspaper presented the facts for their consideration Our opin ions may have been right or they may have been wrong But at any rate an interest in local affairs was created through the press and that interest has increased year by year In that same year of we visited the town library and were appalled at its neglect It was dirty badly lighted and an old stove heated one corner of the tomblike edifice We were informed that nothing had been done to it in years One member of council admitted that he had never been inside the place Others may have been in a similar state of ignorance but they were discreet enough to say nothing SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF We were advised that nothing we could do would move the town fathers Notwithstanding this sombre warning we concentrated our attention on the urgent need of putting the library in good shape We used up a lot of space in the Aurora Banner to drive home the need for giving Aurora an attractive cultural centre Several months later a wonderfully renovated lib rary was officially opened by Mr Angus direc tor of provincial libraries In the course of saying that Aurora hud now something to be proud of in the possession of its library Mr paid tribute to what he called the power of the press and made ref erence to the part the Aurora Banner had taken in bringing such a pleasing situation into existence We have no reason to regret the time and hard work we put into the job of helping the citizens of Aurora to get a library which is one of the best in Ontario RECREATION COMMISSION Time Claims Committee Report Highlight of a meeting of the recreation commission held on Thursday September 17 was the subject of free Sunday skating at the arena A motion at council to advertise the Mechanics Hall for sale or rent to industry The Mechanics Hall was erected in by publicspirited Aurora citi zens by their own labor and at their own cost For many weeks in the Aurora Banner we fought the propo sition to sell or rent the Mechanics Hall to industry Our efforts to save the hall for the citizens made us many enemies some of them on council The Lions club eventually secured the building for the nominal sum of although it was valued as a town capital asset at At any rate the part took in the matter was to preserve the historic hall for the citizens and we wrote many articles in defence of that stand If DeputyReeve Murray and the coun cil of that time had had their way the Lions club would not be using the hall they have today A FEW OTHER THINGS A few other things we may briefly mention we have dona which we believe have helped Aurora We have trailed the chequered career of the planning board which has cost this town several thousands of dollars without doing it one iota of useful service as far as have been able to learn On the contrary its official Plan has tied this town up in such a complicated knot that owner of subdivisions cannot proceed to use the land they own for building purposes While we arc not a temperance bigot or a killjoy we refused to accept a anonymous advertisement for the Era and Express and risked our circulation by steadfastly opposing beer and liquor outlets in Aurora Our stand on this contentious question made us enemies but also made us many new friends with our circulation being better today than at any time in the history of this newspaper The campaign we supported won a substantial majority We have opposed closed meetings of council The citi zens pay taxes and we believe they have a right to know what their representatives are up to For as long as we are in a position to do so we shall keep the citizens informed on what they have a right to know Briefly we have answered the charge of the deputy- reeve that we have not helped Aurora in any shape or form If he will tell us anything that he has done which has helped Aurora we will gladly publish it the question had become rather personal when on had start ed out to try find a building lot at a reasonable price A well- known realtor had informed the mayor that lots were being bought every day of the week but the sales were for proper ties in Newmarket and Rich mond Hill Wont Alter Decision Concerning the campaign to induce the Bell telephone com pany to eliminate the recent im post of a ten cent charge Oak Ridges and Aurora a letter was read stating that the companys decision must stand Rent P Rooms The chairman of the Lake Wilcox public school led a dele gation asking for space at the old public school owing to over crowding at Whitchurch No 13 at Lake Wilcox Council agreed to rent rooms at per month subject to janitor services and heating being provided as well as half the lighting costs being equally shared Steps In Driveway The case of the steps in the driveway of Mr W J Cowling was further considered the dep utyreeve taking the view that Mr Cowling hadnt much to complain of Several of council considered it was a bad engineering job Moffat declaring that Mr Cow ling should not be called on to pay the end agreed to pay half the cost of the re quested work and Mr Cowling paying the other half Will Get Mr Snow of Snow and Best had requested to use the space in front of his store to park his car while calling at his premises The subject being further considered the deputy- reeve said the fairest way would be to put in a meter at the space where Mr Snow wished to park and made ft motion to that effect COUNCIL REPORT Business Man Gets Meter Instead Of Parking Space The mayor struck a severe blow to the prophets who are constantly predicting that Aurora is about to burst at the seams At council meeting on Monday night Sept he said there were only two building lots available in Aurora under The mayor said he wondered and this was carried if members of council Raise the the serious lack of building A long discussion arose on fire lots at a price suitable for the arrangements between Aurora ordinary homebuilder He said King and Whitchurch It was finally agreed to increase the fire fees from to 60 for the first two hours and for every succeeding hour the an nual retainer fees of to re main Fires at Councillor Moffat said she had received complaints of smoke from the burning of rubbish at Sismnns while clothes were hung out to dry A promise had been made that an incinerator would be installed and the town clerk was instructed to send a further letter to the company Arena Deputy- Reeve Murray brought up the question of the repairs to the east end of the arena and slated that work should be un dertaken on the north and south sides He said the original estimate of 1500 was only guesswork and the work would probably cost over 5000 It was agreed that the town would pay some of the cost beyond the grant the arena board had received from Page Col Era and Express classifieds bring results J WILLIS Druggist The Drug Store News agent Tobacconist etc
