in the artist and the audience gave her the compli ment of complete silence during her performance and rousing plaudits at its conclusion has set her feet firmly on the narrow and hard road that leads to fame but those of us who know and love her know too that she will never disappoint us There were some other little artists there whom it was a real pleasure to see again I refer to Betty Gordons distractions unknown to past generations Then came the speaker of the evening Mr who gave one of the best addresses of its kind which we have ever listened to Im sure that the parents pres ent must have been delighted to hear such a clear concise and illustrated talk on school curricu la and its various adaptions to the needs of the pupils and the school The basic alternate and op tional subjects were made very clear with the why and where- fore clearly demonstrated The reason why certain subjects were obligatory too was explained and how as a pupil began to think of the future and have leaning to certain ways of life the subjects best suited to that choice could be added to the basic studies He said that they wore going to make it possible for shop work and home economics too on occasion to interchange The girls would have a chance to learn to fix and mend refractory household gadgets while the I boys would learn to cook a meal when called upon to do so Mr Lockhart said that he did not agree with those education ists who did not believe in home work He said no pupil could prepare his work in spares As the student advances an Increas ing amount of time should be given to homework Mr concluded with what the other half of the fam ily and consider a saying to be treasured There are no bar gains In education Mrs Introductory remarks were well chosen and to the point and a profitable and pleasurable evening came to a close Newmarket Art Gallery We wended our way thither on Saturday afternoon and spent a very pleasant hour browsing around among the pictures I think that more and more people are finding that painting satis some inner need some search after beauty a reaching one to grasp something that one never wholly catches elusive beautiful I fell this because I paint too and more and more see beauty in the unexpected places Sines and tints and shadows that reveal themselves only when the eye is trained to see them We noticed how beautifully in some water pictures the artist had caught the sky reflections while in some others there was divergence never soon In reality We were glad to see a departure into portrait painting to me a particularly difficult assignment hut a fascinating one It scorned fitting that some of the paintings of late Mm Walter Stephens should he In their place One picture I have always loved of the lake from her at It satisfies me It seems to me it would be a fine thing If permanent could he found where our art ists could have at nil times come of the work on view for the ptensuro of the public and also for their own gain
