te We came across a fine bit of poetry recently and we pass It on to you with the prayer it may be a blessing THE HAND But now Lord thou ait our father we are the clay and thou our potter and we all are the work of thy hand Is To the Potters house I went down one day And watched Him while mould ing the vessels of clay And many a wonderful lesson I drew As I noted the process the clay went thro Trampled and broken down trodden and rolled To render more plastic and fit for the mold How like the clay that is human I thought When in Heavenly hands to per fection brought For self must be cast as the dust at His feet Before it is ready for service made And pride must be broken and selfwill lost- All laid on the altar whatever the cost But lo by and by a delicate vase Of wonderful beauty and exqui site grace Was it once the vile clay Ah yes yet how strange The Potter has wrought so mar velous a change Not a trace of the earth nor mark of the clay The fires of the furnace have burned them away Wondrous skill of the Potter the praise is is due In whose hands to perfection and beauty it grew Thus with souls lying still con tent in Gods hand That do not His power of work ing withstand They are molded and fitted a treasure to hold Vile clay now transformed into purest of gold Here lies the secret of true holiness and a successful Chris tian experience absolute sur render to all His all of the local papers concerning the establishment of a factory by Watson Food Pro ducts in the village of King City As president of the newly formed King City Business Association I would like to clarify a few points that seem to be in doubt in the minds of certain individuals in the village The King City Business Mens Association was formed on April at a meeting called in the Legion hall With mem bers present a board of five di rectors was elected and given the power to appoint from them selves a president vice-presi- secretarytreasurer and two directors After these directors were elected a motion was moved seconded and unanimously car ried by those present that the King City Business Mens tion endorse and whole heartedly support the action of Watson Food in es tablishing a plant in the village of King City was instructed as one of the directors that time to so in form Mr Watson by letter and secure the signatures of those present and any other business men who cared to sign this let ter showing their support I made a canvass of business men of the village and when I sent the letter to Mr Watson there were 2d signatures The board of directors jyas given the power by the meeting to make any suggestion which the members saw fit to encour age industry in the village Af ter taking up the matter as a body and receiving unanimous support from the 28 men who signed the letter it was decided to ask for water concessions for a period of time from the vill age commissioners At a meeting of the village commissioners on Monday May there seemed to be some doubt in the minds of certain individuals who represented a group called the Ratepayers As sociation They wished to know from the commissioners received their request regarding this water concession and on what authority the request was made I think that this explanation will clear up the point in ques tion I do not feel however that anyone outside of the Busi ness Mens Association has the right to demand to know any of the inner workings of the associ ation They however refused to believe the statement made by at least one of the commis sioners regarding the extent of support from the men of the community to the new pro ject I do feel that any individual has the right to question the ad visability or legality of letting a factory build on any site In a village such as ours What we as a group objected to is the fact that when the petition was circu lated requesting the township council to enact a zoning bylaw in the village there was a num ber of people who signed the pe tition who did not realize just what they were signing We un derstand also that the petition circulated outside the vill age limits We do not feel that anyone living outside the age should have any say in the village affairs I trust that in this letter have made the stand taken by our association quite clear and also have substantiated any ac tion taken by the commissioners In granting water concessions to Watson Food Products Hall President King City fare even under attack by the most powerful weapons yet used This is the keynote of instruc tion contained in a federal civil defence handbook Personal Pro tection under Atomic Attack published by the Department of National Health and Welfare whose minister Hon Paul Mar tin is responsible for civil de fence at the federal level Intended as a general guide to the population at a time when Canada is organizing and training services to cope with mass disas ter the civil defence manual is predicated upon the possibility that some of our cities could be targets for atomic bombs The book was printed before it was disclosed that some na tions have carried experimenta tion with deathdealing weapons into the field of hydrogen explo sives which may be even more lethal than the muchpublicized atom bombs But experts of the Defence Research Board Canada scientific advisers to the civil de fence authorities believe that the principles which it sets forth in laymans language hold good un der any type of attack including those with high explosives or in cendiary bombs and indeed are applicable in most types of peace time catastrophe as well Playing Safe This business of getting ready for attack by an atomic or some other kind of bomb does not mean that the place in which we live is going to be bombed the book notes in its introduction It simply means that we are playing safe Its the sort of RED CROSS SHIPMENTS The Newmarket Red Cross shipped the following to Head quarters in Toronto in May quilts crib quilts 60 pairs mens socks pairs chance The parallel between civil de fence and insurance is drawn throughout informational materi al issued by the Civil Defence Division of the Department of National Health and Welfare It reiterates in all its publications that since disaster is no respec ter of persons or places everyone must be prepared to meet any type of emergency including en emy attack Civil Defence is described as organized preparedness helping to minimize the effects of disas ter save lives and property main tain production and sustain the countrys will to pull through and to fight back out of adversity Preparedness Pays If Canada became involved in a war and was subjected to hos tile action government officials feel that the enemy would be more interested in bombing un prepared communities than those where everybody was ready be cause then they could cause more casualties and do far great er damage So the better pre pared the better a communitys chances of escaping with little or no injury As a matter of fact says the government book our chances according to the law of averages are pretty good in any case but they are far better if we take ap propriate precautions The book goes on to describe the types of atomic weapons which could be used against Can adian communities explains what to do now to prepare for such emergency what to do if attack comes and how to carry on af terwards Included in the manual are clear instructions on construction of basement shelters and shelters and special hints which may be invaluable to citizens in wartime Copies of the manual Personal Protection under Atomic Attack are available free to all civil de fence workers through Provin cial Civil Defence offices and ar rangements have been made by the Queens Printer Ottawa for its
