American League baseball game that a slim wiry Negro was called from the St bullpen and to the mound in emergency Ordinarily this wouldnt be unusual But this Negro was least years Perhaps more Yet lor inning after inning he stood on the pitching hill defying the power of Clevelands heavyhitting team to score a run off him Inning after inning he flung his pitching wizardry at the enemy Baffled by his streaking fast ball his tantalizing curves the powerhouse team went Not until ten scoreless innings had been pitched by this veteran Negro did Cleveland break through with the winner The Negro was Satchell Paige one of baseballs most fabulous personalities And this his second such effort of the season rates we think as one of the great feats of the baseball year something to enthuse those who like to see a wrong righted The wrung was this Here is a man who vas probably the finest pitcher of his time and his time was long But he had no chance to prove it Seems to us we have heard of the feats of Old ever since we started growing up though literacy that cant be true Competent baseball men told us for years that Paige would burn up either big league given the op portunity At a late date in fife at an age when most ballplayers are not good enough for minor leagues even Paige got his belated chance For fame came late to It was not until the twilight of his amazing career that he was given a chance to pitch in the big leagues by Bill Veeck at Cleveland There in he got a chance to pitch in his first World Series You can spend some time speculating what a pitcher Paige must hove been years ago when there more steel and rubber in his That today he could at his age pitch scoreless innings in top company makes one stand ready- to believe any legendary tale they tell of Old Batchs fabulous exploits games pitched in 20 years for instance Thats a game every days the year round Batch probably did it An amazing figure and a notable addition to the list of those who prove that while life may begin at life end there in sport with such exhibits as Willie Jersey Joe Bob and Bill Cook offered on behalf of the defence How Calvert DISTILLERS LIMITED AMHttSTftOftV Parade of ladles Interested in making puffed pil lows asked to bring material needles and thread and Mrs will glMlyossUt you DEAR SIR OR MADAM On Monday September you are asked to vote on the question of whether you wish to have the Main Street of the Town and for your information submit herewith the following Up to now the centre ft of Main Street has formed part of the suburban road system of the Tor onto and York Roads Commission and has been main tained by it It has been intimated to Council that before long Main Street will be taken off the roads system of the Toronto and York Roads Commission and handed back to the Town to maintain With this in mind the Com- mission included in its estimates for this year a sum to entirely rebuild this centre ft This estimate was duly approved by the County of York the City of Toronto and the Province of Ontario the three bodies who supply the funds of the Toronto and York Roads Commission It is important to bear in mind that it is extremely unlikely that this approval could be obtained in another year It is also of interest to note that this approval was obtained in the year that the late J Spill otto was Warden of the County of York The centre 22 ft cannot be unless the whole street is done also and the estimated cost of repaying the whole of Main Street from Water Street Davis Drive is as follows Mrs visited at the home of Mrs Harold on Monday Sunday school will bo carded on as usual pm Two of Brown Hill school trustees colobrated their birth days last Sunday Sept so many happy returns Roy and Miller Water Street to Millard Avenue Millard Avenue to Ontario Street Ontario Street to Davis Drive Total estimated cost 2IJ4D7000 The breakdown of this cost between the Town of Newmarket the Department of Highways which will pay a grant to the Town for the work and the Toronto and York Roads Commission is as follows Toronto and York Roads Commission Department of Highways Grant Town of Newmarket This cost will provide the following pavement and sidewalks with new water connections included 1 At Water Street pavement will be ft wide and sidewalks ft wide an increase in pavement width of about ft 2 At Timothy Street pavement will be ft wide and sidewalks ft wide an increase in pave ment width of about ft At Millard Avenue pavement will be ft wide and sidewalks wide an increase in pavement width of about ft At Ontario Street pavement will be ft wide and sidewalks ft wide very little change in pave ment width From Ontario Street to Davis Drive the pavement will be ft wide with sidewalks of 10 ft width an increase in pavement width of about ft To briefly summarize out of a total estimated tost of for rebuilding the Main Street the Town will receive from the Toronto and York Roads Commission by way of grant from the Department of Highways and will be called upon to raise by way of debenture The Town recently sold deben tures at a little above par On that basis to retire a debenture issue of over a period of years would require an additional two mills of taxes With the growth of the Town continuing it is fair to forecast a steadily increasing assessment which would correspondingly reduce the amount of the tax rate required to retire the annual debt charge Again with a new pavement the cost of mainten ance should be negligible at least during the first ten years It is hard to give you any accurate estimate of the amount spent annually in maintenance over the past years but informed estimates have been as high as and certainly it could not be less than This saving set off against the annual debt charge could reduce the increase in the tax rate to as low as one mill trust that the foregoing will assist you in decid ing whether to vote for or against the of Main Street on September 22 Yours faithfully JOSEPH VALE MAYOR j A
