Continent Here is the flrat of letters written from Conference Grounds Read ing Berks and dated July Dear John I havent been in volved in anything really exert ing to date but thought haps you and your readers might be Interested in a routine report of what I have been doing Also I am a little afraid that perhaps my parents might like to have a bit of information on me To back track a little bit per- I should begin with the time of sailing at Quebec which was July an Insufferably hot day the like of which I have not had opportunity to experience since We sailed at one minute past midnight and naturally no one turned in until we were out of sight of Quebec so I didnt get much sleep that night and I havent had an opportunity to catch up since If anyone thinks they will take a rest by going on an ocean voy age they will have to be a her mit to accomplish it as there Is something doing almost twenty four hours daily Add to that the fact that we had to move our watches ahead fifty minutes every night and you get a strenuous time The crossing was very quiet and I didnt come in contact with any sickness al though I did hear that there were a few cases The weather was quite cool once we got out of the gulf so fairly heavy clothes were the order of the day I did muster the courage to go swimming once and it was quite exhilar ating Of course the fact that the pool was up in first class where we werent supposed to trespass added zest Some of us also managed to crash the dance on first class a time or two without being thrown out but when one of our lowly group went to the first bar one time he found that service had suddenly been suspended Perhaps I should also report a little on the other side of ship board life There were about Quakers on board all bound for more of the Quaker con ferences or celebrations that are taking place in Britain and Europe this summer There were about fifteen of us headed for this Young Friends gather and we held a meeting every morning after breakfast in or der to prepare ourselves for the meetings to come Our intention to have a Quaker meeting ort Sunday was printed in the ships bulletin with the result that we had between and 100 at meeting We also participated in the Protestant service on Sunday morning which had an attendance of about 250 The priest held mass every morning so we were real ly quite well taken care of from a religious viewpoint We landed at Southampton last Tuesday night and Hie has run at quite a dizzy pace ever since We took the boat train to London right from the ships side- and got Into the great met ropolis around ten You can imagine how easy it would be to get a room at that time of night However one of our num ber had phoned various places and finally landed us piace of sorts at Youth Hostel called The Hermitage quite appropriately We had to take the under ground transfer to the bus and finally walk nearly half a mile all loaded down with luggage until we could hardly move Certainly Londoners were made aware that a new party of what with our trying to figure out what our pound and thill- amounted to and whether we had been shortchanged etc Wednesday morning we were on a conducted tour of part of downtown London seeing many of our historical old buildings and going through Westminster Abbey in great detail Among other things I saw the corona tion chair with the stone of Scone restored to its place In cidentally our guide pronounced It scone and not as I En and MM 3 leer SttM York i There will be no open season for deer in York County this year had been some talk of it but the general objection to a menace to crops The There are teachers of law it from township councils seems of the township councils was in Canada to have been heeded by the prov incial government- There had been reports that deer were becoming so plentiful In the county that they constitut ed a menace to crops The that the fanners would rather have a deer nuisance than to risk damage and wild shooting by the hunters i i had been led to believe by Tor onto papers Thursday I spent at the Sussex County Agricultural Show which was held on the estate of Lord new Midhurst It was quite an interesting event very different from our own fairs and in some ways very refreshing Chief superiority in my estim ation was the fact that there was absolutely no midway or side show with their noisy barkers to pollute the airwaves Greatest disappointment was the absolute absence of cattle and swine on account of the prevalence of foot and mouth disease However there were some excellent horses and the jumping classes were really superb Friday I came up here and this has been my headquarters since then It is really a Salva tion Army property and is an excellent spot for such an event as this conference There is a large old brick residence where we eat and some people also sleep there Most of us sleep in the conference block which is really a glorified barracks but quite nice There are about of us and we represent just about every part of the world pun exists I am the Canadian and the Am ericans try to claim me as one them but so far I have man- to maintain my national identity This letter is becoming too so I will leave telling what arises out of this gathering for another time I might just comment that so far I have not run into any AMAZING NEW MYSTERY SCENT IMP LURES FUES TO editor are always welcome bat names of the writers must be known to the editor The Editor was keenly inter ested in that editorial from the Printed Word entitled People Arc Consumers and especially in this forthright paragraph Re cently a printers union asked the Ottawa government not to let any immigrant printers into Can- unless the union said so If the members of the printers un ion were native Indians or Es kimos there might be more logic in this idea But most Canadians are either immigrants or descen dants of immigrants Who are Canadians to argue against let- ling in more of their own kind think it was only two or three months back that the represent atives of the textile industry in Canada waited upon the immi gration ministry at Ottawa and pointed out that conditions in their industry were none too bright and asked that the inflow of textile workers among immi grants be slowed down If re member aright they got the assurance they wanted At the time felt that this was neither a desirable nor con structive approach to the peren nial problem of immigration The above printers union story on me too basis simply accents my conviction in this matter Mr Editor- Certainly it very much reminded this reader of the as surance of one of the greatest Americans Franklin Roosevelt in an address on this same theme We are all immigrants Only last week for instance I read this assertion by one of the US commentators With a wealth of virtually vital resource Canada lacks the most important one people Nevertheless the fact that ac cording to a recent official an nouncement from Ottawa Can adas population increased an es timated in the year ended June bringing the total to is good news to all Can adians but especially to our fanners who realize the fact that as Intimated your edi torial People Consumers and who welcome these extra new customers for food and fibre A GREATER CANADA A Motors Vols with a touch of your toe Most cars lead a double life A good part of the time theyre running errands taking children to school taking women to stores taking men to work taking family and friends to clubs and social functions It doesnt call for a very great output of horsepower for duties like these But there are times when you want a car that can do vastly more and these are the times when youll want what this years Roaumaster has to offer Beneath its proud hood theres a Fireball Engine a valveinhead that can let loose 170 lively horsepower when needed And alongside this engine theres also an Airpower which thriftily feeds fuel and air through two barrels for normal driving which means that you now use less gas at than youd formerly use at But there are two barrels in reserve waiting for you to call them into action and they let loose a soaring rush of power that sinks your shoulders back into the seat Cushion swoops you past a truck out of a tight spot- up a hill sets your speedometer needle to registering added miles more than twice as fast as your watch can tick off the seconds This is an experience you certainly should know firsthand You should also know how Power Steering provides a helping hand in slowmotion manoeuvres lets you keep the feel of the car in straightaway driving And just for good measure this 1952 also has the biggest brakes on any postwar the greatest trunk space since spare tires moved off the front fenders a warning light that glows when the parking brake is set and to lop it all the smartest interior fabrics that has ever offered When are you coming in to look this distinguished performer over We urge you to make it soon
