Gravel Sand and Crushed Stone and General Hauling believe the first venture to wards a hospital in Newmarket was made by Dr Hutt as a pri vate hospital in his own house the building now occupied by Dr Sales before Dr Dales made additions to it I do not recall any of the circumstances of his venture or why it was terminat ed He may have run it until his death I do not remember I remember more distinctly when Dr J Wesley under took to run a private hospital in his home but did not operate it very long In the meantime Dr Dales had purchased the Dr Hutt pro perty and purchased from Dr Wesley what equipment he had and opened the hospital in his home Dr Dales saw that there would be an advantage in having a charter as a general hospital In order to do so he had have directors so he got some of the town men appointed as directors and applied to the government for a charter and was successful in obtaining a charter under the name of the York County Hos pital There was a financial advan tage in having a charter- for at that time the government paid direct to the management com mittee for a period of years the sum of a day for every patient in the hospital whether they were in a public semipri vate or private ward This was Here is a list of the directors as far as I can find out from the minutes of those who attended the directors meeting J Har vey Dr Scott A J McCaffrey Mr Eves Brock Cufrey Mr Lister Ezra Penrose B Hunter Fred Geo P Oilman Six of these- directors have died Five have- moved from town leaving B Hunter and myself the only original di rectors in town and myself the only one still on the board There is statement dated Which says that because cramped quarters a committee was appointed to- see if more suitable property could be found According to the minutes there were three properties proposed J house St Everett Scotts The Cedars Victoria St Cane property Huron and Prospect St None of these properties were for rent so the directors were forced to- try and raise the money to purchase will re fer to the financing later I see by the minutes that an architect was secured to report oh the properties His report of the property did not lend itself very well for chang ing and no grounds The Cedars was more favor able It had quite large grounds but ihn altering of the building Next Tuesday evening at eight oclock Finance Minister Doug las Abbott will walk into the House of Commons with a brief case in hand and deliver his an nual budget Interest here on Parliament Hill as throughout the country is focused this allimport ant pronouttcemeht which will determine our tax levy for the coming year The contents or the budget are a closely guarded secret Members of parliament who for months have been discussing the various aspects of our complex economy and making hopeful representations to the minister are just as much in the dark as The Newmarket Era and Express Thursday April Page United Kingdom The increase was not duetp action by the Canadian government but was due to ah increase by British postal authorities charges for transportation and de livery parcels of Canadian origin I this because the increase may be troubling others in addition to those who have written me Committees Much of this of parlia ment is done by committees The standing committees of the house are privileges and elec tions railways canals and tele graph lines private bills bank ing and commerce public to what the budget actually will counts agriculture and as are the people anywhere and fisheries done to assist hospitals to make it reasonably suitable nance and get started But was going to be costly as the after the 10year period they paid the on public pa tients only Since then the pays on a very differ ent scale which does not com mence to pay the cost of caring house was almost the center of a whole block and there wore houses built all around the four sides of the block so that the back of these houses arid gar dens were against this property for a patient in the public ward So that was turned down and THE VARIETY OF DESIGNS in our collection of MONUMENTS is such that we can meet almost any require ment both as to kind and cost We also make memorials to order of every description Youll find our work excellent always and our service prompt and reasonably priced G W and SON as they also set the rate that the hospital shall charge for public ward patients During the early days of Dr Dales operation of the hospital he got the ladies interested in organizing a Ladies Hospital Aid and I remember they raised considerable money The ladies did not rest until they got sev eral of Newmarket business men interested and arrangements were made to reorganize Some new directors were appointed and finally an agreement was made with Dr Dales to sell what equipment he had and rent to the new board of directors part of his house for the sum of a month and continue the hos pital in his home The first step was to advertise for a superintendent and Miss was engaged and took full charge immediately- I was unable to find any min utes on record before Feb except on a loose piece of paper in the minute book that states that Dr Dales started the hospital some time in and the new board of directors were appointed and took over the management some time in and operated it in Dr Dales house MAIN ST NEWMARKET Fed of Agriculture JOHN STOMA Newmarket Phone we had the S Cane property with large grounds beautifully situated This property could be purch ased for 15000 if we did not take the land to the south Otherwise the price was 16- I might say here that the main property was afterwards bought for 15000 and later the balance of the property was taken over Now it was here our troubles began for we had to raise money and lots of it I think next I must acquaint you with some of the financial troubles we had As I said be fore I could find no minutes till and my memory does not recall how we raised the money to pay for the purchase Of beds and equipment from Dr Dales The only thing I can conclude what we did Was to charge membership fees for I see in one place in the minutes of which slated that a special com was appointed to see about hew members and renewal of the old ones It stated that only IS members had paid their membership dues of where last year there were over How to finance the purchase of the Cane property gave the committee a lot of worry First the directors tried to interest the town council In May a motion was passed by the di rectors that the Hospital Board request the town council to sub mit for approval to the rate payers of the town bylaw for the sum of 15000 by way of a grant to the Hospital Board to purchase the land and build ings now owned Cane for a hospital memory of the soldiers of Newmarket and sur- country who served overseas in the Croat War This was turned down by Another proposition was made that the board would enter into a contract that ail returned soldiers would he treated free of charge if the would assist but also avail It was then decided to see how much money could be raised by subscription to the Cane property or build a build ing outright A committee was appointed Id ascertain the cost of a now building about the size of what we would require in order that all would feel satis fied which would he the best a cheapest move to take the the Cane property and remodel or build View throughout The committee reported that a new building would cost the sum of without any land The architect estimated that the changes on the properties would he around 11000 So together with the of the Cane property was only about half the cost of a new building So the board of direc tors decided to see what sub scriptions they could get tfclhcr with what subscription they hoped to get it Was thought advisable to issue bonds so 30- worth of bonds ait- thorized with interest at six per cent The two we would finance our proposition Hut here again we were appointed after several weeks two months to ho exact when it was found that the sales of bonds and subscriptions were not to our hopes so a meeting of directors was called on July The report on bond sales and subscriptions only So after a gen eral discussion following motion was moved by Eyes and Lister find It was unanimously No one but the minister and his closest advisers know the con tents of the budget until it is announced the House Despite warnings that we must not expect substantial tax relief is not unlikely there will be some tax and reductions oh some items Business which has been somewhat disorganized by an ticipation and speculation con cerning the budget will be re lieved by its presentation no matter what it contains Next Tuesday we get the tax picture for the coming year and then mines forests and waters indus trial relations debates external affairs printing library and res taurant In addition to these standing committees special committees of the house are set up from time to time to con sider questions of special con cern In committee procedure is much less formal in the House of Commons and the members are free to call as witnesses de partmental officials and ports in various lines of activi ties- addition to the regular HERES MEWS SEE THE GEM SPRAY TYPE MILK COOLER FULLY AUTOMATIC Only inches to lift cans Made by Groh week viewed a United States film portraying the fight waged in that country against the dread foot and mouth disease which has made its appearance in Western Canada The film showed the terrible
