business this week you have been conscious of many of the towns young ones wearing the uniforms of cubs scouts brownies and dangers There are approximately 200 Newmarket children connected with these groups MEMORIAL SERVICE AT AID MEETING A memorial service for our late sovereign was held at the regular monthly meeting of the Junior Ladies Aid Christian Baptist church on Tuesday Feb The group met at the home of Mrs Gordon Stiles Mrs Norman Fry led the de votional period which opened with the singing of Abide Me Mrs Robt Morrison play ed as her piano solo a favorite of King Georges Handels target Mrs Morrison gave an inspiring paper on his life The mem orial service closed with prayer led by Mrs Stiles followed by two minutes of silent prayer for the Royal family and the Lords prayer was repeated in unison Mrs William Robinson chaired the business session A dainty valentine lunch was served by the hostesses Mrs Herman nitz Mrs Charles Wass Mrs Godson and Mrs Brae Each year this week is set aside to help acquaint eachgeom- with the program offered by this worldwide youth It is the only youth group which welcomes into full membership Moslems Jews and Christians as well as those of other faiths In oil Christian countries it is com pletely interdenominational It is arid without distinction- It is interesting to know that in countries scouting and have been outlawed this movement the teachings of home church and school and co operates with educational forces working toward the saw goat Eacfcriiemoet taught to the religious beliefs of others and encouraged to attend vice of to which he belongs The movement of scouting and guiding is a citizenship training program It offers youngsters from eight years of age to their late teens an opportunity for wholesome recreation arid friend- 1 market connected with this program in Newmarket is very great The Guide Local association and the Scout mens committee serve similar purposes In the girls and boys work The local association is a body of represen tative women from the commun ity whose standing ensures the soundness of the movement in the estimation of parents and public They do not necessarily have to be mothers of guides and brownies- The district commis sioner is chairman of the local association Duties of this group consist in taking all outside work and responsibility from the shoul ders of the leaders so that they will be free to direct their com panies and packs And as we have not men tioned the most important link in this youth movement the leaders- Without their unselfish giving of their time and energies to weekly meetings planning extra events arranging tests and being available for reference and encouragement there would be no scouting or guiding in EXIST FOR COMMISSIONED RANKS s a service ships Outdoor activities after- school hobbies and interests that will be of lasting value to each Child are included in the pro gram A little girl when joining the brownies makes her promise To do my best to God and the Queen to help other people every day especially those at home The Brownie Law which she learns and tries to follow is A Brownie gives in to the older folk A Brownie does not give in to herself The Cubs have a similar promise and law The Brownie Motto is Lend a Hand Girls of years of age upon joining a Girl Guide company take as their promise Oh my honor I promise that I will do my best To do my duty to God and the Queen To help other people at all times To obey the Guide Law The Guide Law combines ten rules which help a girl to keep her promise and fol low the Guide Motto Pre pared The law states A guides honor is to be A guide is loyal A guides duty is jo be useful and to help others A guide is a friend to all and a sis to every other guide A guide is courteous A guide is a friend to animals A guide obeys ord ers A guide smiles and sings under all difficulties A guide is thrifty A guide is pure in thought in word and in deed Scouts have a similar promise and law The aim of the scoutguide movement is to develop initia tive selfreliance and latent ap titude for leadership It stresses obedience and all those qualities required to ploy an active part in the service of the community It is an ideal means of establishing organized youth activities for boys and girls When you add to the total of children in this movement the membership of the Guide Local association the Scout Mens committee and the ScoutGuide Mothers auxiliary which includes mothers of all children in any of the groups the number many months men and women carried on with our local boys and girls groups single- handed one woman attempt ing to lead little girls at Brownies and a teenaged boy with over 30 At present there are leaders for all groups but new volun teers arc always welcome and needed If there were more leaders more youngsters could be brought into the groups With the present number of loaders they do well to instruct those already enrolled without recruit ing new members It is not necessary to have had training in guides or brownies Such instruction can he given in Newmarket to those interested in training to he leaders Girls or boys must be years of age before they cart he accepted as registered leader Of course experience in any youth work will be assistance id the pros pective leader It would be encouraging if within the next Jew weeks we could hear from some of you that are interested in helping in some phase of scouting or guid ing In Newmarket As district Commissioner for Guides we should accept any applications for guides or volunteers In the girls work and would pass along to he secretary of the mens committee Rev J Rhodes any names of boys leaders GUEST SPEAKER Rev will be guest speaker at a meeting of the Young Peoples
