economy been placed in a most satisfactory state the time has come to better remunerate those whose stipends stand in need of augmentation Sir William has therefore directed that the minimum salaries of postmasters be raised from to a year and that the sal aries of all tirosc who are paid on a of revenue be increased by per cent on the amount which they would receive under the scale hitherto in operation Postmasters who act as intermediaries between the world at large and smaller offices dependent on them have the allow ances they receive on this- head in creased by per cent The commissioners paid for the transaction of money order and sav ing bank business have also been in creased by the same percentage The remuneration for the transaction of postal note business been doubled The allowance for rent of space has also been put on a more equit able basis Hitherto no compensa tion whatever for the room occupied in work has been given un til the business of the showed a revenue of a year but it is obvious that if an allow ance was reasonable then it must have been desirable long before that point was reached as a cert-ainroeas- of space is necessary when the operations a reach any magnitude whatever Accordingly the postmasters rent allowance is made to begin when the revenue office reaches SI a year amount allowed or a is SO a year and increases of a year
