for driving borne fc 1 T r m friends Overcoat Sate Commences today at the Roche Company Limited of Mr Silver t Various theories have been advanc ed as to- cause of the fatal ex plosion in Newmarket on Wednesday morning of last week and a thorough invest has shown many dl them to be without foundation The question has apparently nar rowed down to the determination the tensile strength the steel used in the construction the boiler that caused such regrettable destruction to property and human life Por tions of the plates of the boiler specimens the rivets used and other material are now undergoing an analysis and practical tests at the School Practical Science in Toron to Plates Were Extra Heavy The suggestion that the centre sheet tie boiler was light and thin has been proven be absolutely incor rect Inspector t John the Boiler Inspection Insurance Co lias measured portions of the plate with a micrometer a most sensitive and accurate instrument and has as certained that the sheet in question was of an inch in thickness The plate usually used for this por tion of a boiler is 375 of a inch The theoretical bursting pressure of steel of tills thickness said Mr St John is pounds of steam to the square inch always providing of Course that the steel was of the or dinary tensile strength The rivet holes and riveting reduced the maxi mum strength to about seventy per cent- Harry the acting en gineer who was in charge the room when the explosion occurred and who is the only man alive today who can give authentic information states that just a few minutes before the crash gauge registered only pounds of pressure The safety valve was fixed to lift at pounds so that there could not possibly have been more than that amount after rite morning bells began to ring the spirit of Mr Silver took its flight to the treat beyondleading a cloud of sor row over his peaceful and nanny home but not without the Christians hope Banc knows no sorrow That heaven cannot heal Mr Silver was ah energetic and successful business man always more or less impulsive and exceedingly gen erous when impressed that the was a worthy one Deceased was the only son the late Silver of where was burn and spent bis days When a young ran he came to Newmarket and after for time entered upon the mer cantile business for himself in a Kents furnishing store Prosperity to smile upon him He launched out into real estate buying horses etc and everything turned to silver Some years ago he serv ed io the Town Council A few years ago he opened a large dry store in Cpllfngwoodand bo urne so popular with the people that he elected Mayor the town in In seeking reelection In Jan he was seized with and retired from the contest then his health has- grad ually married Miss of the Jesse of- tis town who with his are eft to mourn their great loss His death is also deeply regretted many relatives and friends as evidenced by the attendance at U funeral on Tuesday afternoon services were conducted by A Ma by J The Town Council at- tended in a body and the Town il of was represented by and Watson and of the from a distance were I Silver of Sutton Sluing and Karl UC were interred at Cemetery sure when the explosion came Messrs James engineer of the Home Life building James chief engineer the 1 Hall and Thomas Walsh engineer at the high level pumping station on behalf the Stationary Steam Society Toronto visited the scene of the explosion at the works the United Factories New market on Saturday forenoon for the purpose ot inquiring into the cause of the explosion Their investigation showed that no charge of negligence could be laid against those in charge of the boilers and that the Government Inspectors had done their work thoroughly There was no evidence of low water in the boilers and had been in use six or eight they show they had been well taken care of They also round that Chief Engineer Potter and Harry who was temporarily in charge engine were both capable men and that the Cane people took every precaution to ensure of their employes The factory had always been careful about the ability of those in charge employing only good men One important point they however discovesred that the boiler plates were and that the style of riv eting was not what it should be They suggest that the Government take steps to have the boiler plates properly inspected before being used the quality of the mater ial and work on tne boilers the three engineers knew the makers to be a firm of very high standing and the parte of the plates showed them- to be stronger than the stand ard specifications tailed for The also seemed to be firstclass work could say nothing at present as to the probable cause the disaster The boiler inspectors were the best men in country and they will make a most exhaustive in vestigation into the whole matter Consulting the Boiler Inspection Company that there Is absolutely no question with regard to the sufficiency of water in the boiler Mr points out that the red bricks of the big chimney were whitened right up- to the top on the side nearest the point of impact This bleaching said Mr was the effect of the steam after it had escaped from the exploded boiler Mr Mills of Toronto secretary the United Factories visited the scene of the explosion the afternoon the occurrence in company with The seams were double thru- out Mr- Brown while the left arm is also burnt from the elbow to the ends of his fingers His face is also badly scarred It will be a couple of months before he will be able to be out of house Mr was the one in the second story the west wing that was injured He worked right near the window The moment- of the ex plosion he felt the floor away The piles of covers around him came tumbling on top of him while he fol low- workmen Mr Dan Cook who was in the ma chine shop was very badly bruised around the shoulders and both net were burned one very badly be a month or six weeks before he will be able to walk Mr face is scarred with a gust of hot cinders that blinded him the moment of- the explosion It is a curious fact that Thomas father oi Frank the fireman who was killed was witnin five feet the spot where bis son was hurled by t the force of the explosion Thomas is an old employe the factory and was 1I07 ing some laboring work in the dry As he hastened through the edge of the wreck Trivett caught sight of his form called for as sistance He responded at once and with the help of Silas Wright and Mike Kennedy rescue not knowing his own son had received fatal injuries He was greatly affected when brought to side of bis dying son whose fate be had so miraculously escaped Mr Trivett was in the boiler room not three minutes before the explo sion and is positive that there was waiter in the guage of the boiler that exploded Mr Bell who was caught In the dynamo room by the south wall falling upon him was able to be out the beginning of the week AH the other injured will soon be around again as Some will drop out choice others will be forced to take a back seat because of some more popular not to say more competent candidates seeking to gratify their aspirations for municipal honors In some
