school days commenced when I was but four years old Samuel Brook being my first teacher Our school house at this time about the year was a frame building feet square ceiling not feet from floor teachers desk on a platform about inches above the main floor scholars desks fastened to wall around the whole room except door en trance and along teachers platform Each the larger scholars had a desk with lid for the desks were so divided in which they could keep books unmolested by others The seats were made of pine slabs with holes bored in to admit the legs which made with round hits of timber and cut off proper length for die required The scholar could either sit facing- the desk or turn around facing the teacher and school The younger scholars had long benches made lower to suit their different sizes without backs to them A stove over three feet long was placed in the centre of the room for the purpose of keeping it comfort able in cold weather School hours in those days in summer were from to with intermission half an hour and from 1 to with same inter mission in the one hour less both before and afternoon The farmers those sending to school furnished the wood to keep the place warm In those days quill for writing were used exclusively and the teaclter was expected to keep the scholars pens in good condition for writing The small children were classed ac cording to their advanced condition and were called up to say their lessons perhaps three or four times a day and be taught by the teacher The older scholars who in the win ter were partly composed of young men and young womeo if they had a puzzling question that they could not solve went to teacher with it Spelling lessons were given every day in a long class near close of the school from the spelling book provided for these per haps the present plan teaching spelling is not any improvement on way This much for the internal arrangement of the school at that time and is a picture of the school I attended in my earlier school days Then as for the teacher it was quite common for him to board around among the parents sending children to the school As for sal ary if he boarded around per quarter per scholar or if he board ed himself Was his remuneration Ev ery Saturday afternoon or every Saturday was his only holiday To make his salary safe each per son was required to subscribe for a certain number scholars If lo got 25 subscribed for he was satisfied making him a month ft board NOW ABOUT PUBLIC MATTERS I well remember and have been at the meetings when Township matter were all- done up
