he never said he disqualify me Can flhjyjne Imagine man who has introduced into his election matters the bitterness per- and tactics of my haying- a mass showig that there was corruption on the part ri would have missed the opportunity of exposing that in the courts the result of which would mean that not only would the seat have but that placed at a great disadvantage in a iieW Ife evidently satisfied he could- not establish corruption and was apparently equally desirous myself as the Judge statement shows to have the pe tition and the disposed of in this way I have been a candidate in a number contests In North York and have always endeavored to have them conducted in an honest straightforward manner and- think the general concensus opin ion the riding will be that I ha succeeded in that respect Some may say have resigned your seal for the purpose of avoiding bitterness and legal contention As involve other elect contest will not bitterness and strife bo renewed My answer to that is that although there is no doubt was honestly and legally elected by a majority over in the general election of last I was willing to make the sacrifice of resigning my seat to avoid contention bitterness and Mr Lennox and his friends by my reelection by acclamationwouh a con tinuance this condition affairs and if they force on a contest on them will rest responsibility to the turmoil excitement and inconvenience to the electors incident thereto He and his friends are reported to have said on various occasions that they had tho agreement of settlement and a copy of my resigna tion signed by me while you will observe the Judge states that there were no copies of the original document up to the time of the dis posal the ease on the 2fti immediately after which copies were made in duplicate and handed to each of the parties as stated above They even went so far as to have printed in the Toronto News on January what purported to be my resignation dated Janu ary 2nd and by me such document was ever signed by me one being held by the Judge being the only one in exist ence and that was dated February In Mr Lennoxs speech at Aurora the other day he stated that he had been offered 55IKh on my behalf to have J the trial dropped All that I have to say in reply to that it that I never offeree him my self or through any other person directly or indirectly at any time anything for that purpose The recent byeelections clearly- indicate that public sentiment in the Province is strongly in favor of a continuance in power of Premier Ross and the mandate so unmistakably given on the inst- means that he will be in a position to administer the affairs of the Province during this parliamentary tern This is not to be wondered at as during Iiis short term as Premier more has been done in the direction developing the various interests of the Province and giving to its people than was ever achieved during the same time in any period of our history and the gone work is only nicely beginning Your representative holds the position of Commissioner of Crown Lands perhaps the most important administrative department in the Province Through this department you have a large voice in the opening up and settlement of the areas in New Ontario and the development of our timber and mineral resource- the opening of new avenues for labor and new markets for the products of our business men manufacturers ant farmers in the older portions of the Province You will very properly ask yourself the question what you have to gain by exchanging your present representative for erne having no ex perience in public life Recently Mr Lennox addressed a letter to the prcas a copy of which was sent me through m ail urging purity in election con tests I am glad that at last ho is seized with the view that elec tions should be run in that way and I sincerely hope he will put those views in practice during the coming byeelection I- have always held that view and practiced it in my numerous elections in the past and will continue to pursue the same policy on the present occasion I also desire now to renew the proposition which was made to him on various occasions during the late campaign to hold joint meetings of the two candidates for the discussion of the public questions of the day At that time they were always refused and as no arrangements have yet been made for holding of public meetings it would be an opportune time to reach an understanding to hold a series of Joint meetings during the campaign at which the electors general ly could hear the two candidates and form their own opinion as to views on public questions As you know I have Jived prac tidily all my life in the riding my interests aro there and are with yours ant my record for many years as your representative in municipal and parliament ary matters Is well known to you I desire to express my thanks and appreciation to those electors who were kind enough in the late con test to favor with their vote and their influence and we arc to have a contest In the near future if yon think my past record jus tifies it and have conflderce that I can be of service to Province generally in the of North York in the future I be glad to a renewal ot that confidence as expressed by your vote and influence IN THE E a an who fears to spend a cent And never advertises With little gain must be content Marshall gave a rocsirg ad dress He believed the Liberals of North York were not satisfied with at the last election and were glad of another opportunity to record their votes Ho was sure that time the majority for Mr Davis would be so large that other fellow would stay put In view of the memories of the past what North York has done to secure reforms we all enjoy he appealed to these present to
