The new Veterans' Memorial will sit adjacent to the existing cenotaph at George's Square and is intended for those who are not included in the First World War or Second World War tributes. "It's important to recognize those who proudly serve our country," Mayor Rob Burton said. "Their contributions to the nation should be honoured. For the purposes of this memorial, a veteran is defined as a man or woman who was living in Oakville at the time of their enlistment; and a man or woman who has served in, or with, one of the three recognized branches of the Canadian Armed Forces including the Army, Navy or Air Force, during an active armed conflict or operational theatre. Active service members are also eligible, and include those involved in any joint operation coordinated by the United Nations, NATO or similar multi-nation efforts such as Afghanistan. The new memorial, which will be unveiled later this year, will feature a special tribute to Colonel Geoff Parker. An Oakville native, Colonel Parker was killed while serving in Kabul, Afghanistan when a suicide car bomber attacked the International Security Assistance Force convoy he was traveling in. He is the highestranking Canadian Forces soldier to lose his life in Afghanistan.
