The Oakville driver has always excelled on the California street course, dating back to his days on the Atlantic Champ Car series. He finished third at Long Beach in his very first Atlantic race; he earned his first Indy Lights win there; and last year, in just his second IndyCar start, he finished fourth. That had remained his highest finish -- since equaled three times, including in this year's season opener in St. Petersburg, Florida -- until Sunday. The only surprising element to Hinchcliffe's first chance to uncork some champagne since joining the IndyCar circuit was that he was able to overcome a pre-race penalty and then move up five spots in the final eight laps. The weekend got off to a bad start. Despite qualifying sixth, Hinchcliffe was moved back 10 spots on the starting grid -- a penalty levied against 14 drivers for changing their engine before it had met its minimum mileage requirement. But driving, pit strategy and a last-lap mishap all helped him move up. Hinchcliffe picked up one spot with a pass and two more when cars had to pit for fuel in the final laps. Hinchcliffe and his teammates went with a two-pit strategy and were able to stretch their fuel to avoid a final stop. "Ultimately it came down to the Andretti Autosport guys making the best calls on the pit stand," Hinchcliffe said. "It's great to have such a cool team behind you, supporting you and making those right decisions. That's what makes IndyCar racing so cool; you can start 16th and still have a crack at (a podium finish) if you play the strategy right." Running fifth on the final lap, Hinchcliffe was behind teammate Ryan Hunter-Reay and Takuma Sato. Hunter-Reay tried to get by Sato on one of the final turns but ended up making contact and spinning him. HunterReay crossed the line third, followed by Hinchcliffe, but was then penalized 30 seconds for the contact with Sato, bumping last t year's rookie of the year on to the podium for r the first time. "I do feel bad for Ryan," Hinchcliffe said. "Obviously I'm (on podium) because of his penalty we finished fourth on track and sort of only got there because of him. He was punching holes left, right and center and I was just following him through for part of f the race." Still, Hinchcliffe was enjoying his first podium finish. "It was an eventful race I know from my seat it was exciting. I bet it was from the outside too. It's cool to see some exciting racing back in IndyCar," he said. "I'm just happy to be (on the podium) and hopefully this isn't the last time I get a trophy in this series." The series heads to Brazil for the Sao Paulo Indy 300 April 29.
