Mayor outlines 10 priorities for next three years By CYNTHIA GAMBLE Staff Writer Citing a productive first year of the 2010-2014 council term, Mayor Rick Bonnette listed top 10 priorities for the remainder of the term, at the Halton Hills Chamber of Commerce Mayor's Luncheon Thursday. Speaking to a full house at the Eagle Ridge Golf Course, Bonnette said number one on the list will be the delivery of effective, efficient and economical Town services. He noted that Town taxes will likely rise in 2012 by 5.5 per cent. But, combined with Region and school taxes, the overall tax hike will be at approximately the rate of inflation-- an overall 2.5% hike on tax bills. But, he said, unlike Toronto, services will be maintained at their current standard with no cuts. Also on the top 10 list are: 2. Community engagement-- adding social media to its arsenal of communication tools with the public 3. Continued focus on the 401 Corridor lands. "They will be our bread and butter (taxes and fees) in the future," he said. "Many of you will have heard of the two exciting proposals for high-end outlet malls from Premium Outlets and Tanger Outlets of the United States. Those projects are seeking planning approval now and it is hoped that Halton Hills will see at least one, if not both, of these outlet malls as Gateway Destination projects coming to fruition in Halton Hills in the next two years." Regional projects involving Steeles Ave. improvements and water/wastewater servicing from Trafalgar Rd. to Winston Churchill Blvd. will speed the long-awaited development of the Corridor. 4. Acton Quarry expansion lands could mean an opportunity for the Town to achieve long-term benefits such as the after-use of the site. 5. Continuing community sustainability and energy efficiency initiatives, which are key for business competitiveness. 6. Developing the 1,000 acres between Eighth Line and Trafalgar Rd., south of 15 Sideroad, utilizing a different approach, including a secondary plan detailing community gathering places, gardens, walking and cycling trails and green planning. 7. Lobbying the provincial government to review the Development Charges Act to ensure that new residential growth pays for itself. 8.
